Note from the Editor
I was more excited than usual to share this week’s list of the Top 5 Association Podcasts. I listened to a bunch of them on my flight to a conference this week and I learned some things that I was able to use in conversation with others as soon as I got off of the plane!
Check out this week’s MUST LISTENS and tell me what you think!
1) Engaging in the Next – Association Mixtape: Journeys, Challenges, and the Future (with Steven Stout of TSAE)
I’m beginning to think I just really love listening to Steven Stout.
This episode features Steven Stout, FASAE, CAE, executive director of the Texas Society of Association Executives. (Readers of this newsletter may remember Steven’s name as being one of the co-hosts for a previous Top Pod mentioned here!)
For this podcast, Steven was the guest.
The part that got me thinking was Steven’s sharing about one of his proudest moments in 2016 when he was a new executive director at TSAE and facing the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in 2016 only FOUR WEEKS BEFORE the Annual Meeting. He talks about the way Visit Houston collaborated with his team and how people joined together to create a great experience.
In light of all the turbulent weather our planet is facing, it’s not hard to imagine that many association leaders could find themselves in a similar situation, and Steven’s experience highlights a positive way forward in those times.
The discussion covers personal journeys, industry insights, strategic partnerships, the impact of the pandemic on association innovation, challenges within the association space, the value of state organizations, and the future of the association community. Plus, enjoy some nostalgic moments and light-hearted opinions on “mediocre salads” and Steven’s past as a radio DJ.
2) Sidecar Sync –?Embracing AI to Achieve Remarkable Success with Guy Kawasaki (with Guy Kawasaki of Canva)
SUCH A GREAT DISCUSSION!
In this episode of Sidecar Sync, hosts Mallory and Amith Nagarajan sit down with Guy Kawasaki, Chief Evangelist at Canva and host of the Remarkable People podcast.
One note that I heard mentioned was that Claude 3.5 Sonnet will provide you with a less formulaic prose when using it. I’d already been suggesting Claude for assisting with tasks like article writing, but it was vaildating to hear others sharing the same experience with Sonnet.
Guy shares insights from his new book, “Think Remarkable,” discusses his favorite AI tools, and introduces his custom LLM, Kawasaki GPT. The conversation covers the impact of AI on creativity, the importance of adopting a growth mindset, and how associations can leverage AI for better member engagement and education. Guy emphasizes the importance of being AI-savvy in today’s competitive landscape.
I think the thing I took away from this was that I want to create my own custom LLM, KiKi GPT, like Guy describes in this episode.
Have you done this? Let me know!
3) The Association 100 Podcast (solocast with Colleen Gallagher of OnWrd & UpWrd)
On this episode of The Association 100 Podcast, host Colleen Gallagher wraps up her special three-part series on AI in PR with an insightful solo cast. She explores two critical areas where AI can enhance PR efforts: crisis management and influencer identification and engagement.

Fun Fact: I was fortunate to receive a great intro to Colleen from the master connector Joanna Pineda (of the ALWAYS AWESOME Associations Thrive Podcast) and will soon be chatting with Colleen and will get to know her better. Gotta love this community!
4) Nonprofit Mastermind Podcast –?Mini-Training: The 4 Part Structure For Facilitating Your Own POWERFUL Strategic Plan (with Brooke Richie-Babbage of Founder & CEO, Bending Arc)
While this isn’t exactly an ASSOCIATION-focused podcast, it is what I would consider association-adjacent and for sure relevant to professionals working in small-staff associations, so I am including it here.
In this episode of the Nonprofit Mastermind Podcast, Brooke Richie-Babbage shares her approach to the strategic planning process for nonprofit leaders. She explains how facilitating your own strategic plan can be straightforward and not time-consuming with the right structure.
I love her voice and her pacing. Interesting stuff!
5) Association Transformation – Beyond the Burnout Buzzwords: Cultivating Wellness (with Derek Mulhern of Derek Mulhern Coaching and Consulting)
In this episode of the Association Transformation Podcast, co-hosts Elisa Pratt and Andrew Chamberlain engage in an honest (and humorous) conversation with executive leadership coach Derek Mulhern. They talk about practical strategies for creating a culture of wellness and high performance within associations.
Their discussion covers moving beyond generic values statements, fostering genuine communication, and implementing actionable steps to support team and board members.
