Top 4 Reasons Sash Windows Need Replacing

Timber sash windows are a beautiful addition to any property, adding character to homes with their traditional-looking features.?

?However, understanding when it’s time to replace your customers' sash windows ensures their properties windows and glazing remain as functional as possible.

Here are some of the reasons you should consider updating your sash windows.

  1. Energy-efficient windows

Rattling windows, old fittings and single glazing aren’t the most energy-efficient. So you’ll know it’s time to replace your customers' windows if they can feel a draught coming in or their rooms lose their heat quickly.?

It makes it harder to keep homes at a comfortable temperature during the colder months, increasing the price of energy bills. Modern sash windows are highly energy efficient, from thermally insulating frames to double glazing, keeping the warmth inside.

2. Windows are looking tired

Older sash windows sometimes require a lot of upkeep, so it can be a hassle to maintain them. If your customers' windows are looking like they need some love, consider replacing them with high-quality timber sashes double glazed and with a full factory spray finish. Time and time again we hear that customers are forever painting their existing sash windows on a yearly basis when really they should bite the bullet and have them replaced. This is a massive saving on maintenance and future costs.

Replacing old fittings is another easy way to uplift interiors and give the exteriors some added kerb appeal too. The designs are sympathetically created so that they respect the heritage of the window style and maintain the original charm of the sash windows.

3. Sashes are sticking

Old sash windows are renowned for sticking, so it’s hard to open and close them. This is often due to years of build-up of paint where they have been restored som many times rather than replaced. This makes it difficult or not possible to open windows, which should be used to help manage ventilation and airflow throughout the rooms.?

Another likely reason I see often is snapped sash cords. This is because back in the day they didn't have nylon cord like we do today and it had a tendency to snap. This can be a costly repair as it means removing the old sashes to secure new ones and often why customers don’t bother and opt for screwing them fixed shut instead.?

A further benefit for your customer in replacing their sash windows means they can now be double glazed and hung on nylon cord so they will never snap in the future. Upgrading ball bearing axle pulleys and counter balanced with lead sash weights allows for smooth opening and closing mechanisms, which leave the sashes feeling lighter in weight and easy to control.

4. Quieter homes

If your customers’ windows aren’t blocking out external noise as they want them to, it could be time for an upgrade. Modern fittings with double or triple glazing can drastically improve the sound insulation of sash windows, but could also opt for specialist glass such as toughened or acoustic glazing. For those in conservation areas or listed buildings if there are even other alternatives still.?

Customers often think double glazing is the single biggest factor in reducing noise pollution, this is actually incorrect. By your customer replacing their sash windows this allows for their new ones to be fully draught-proofed with our English Heritage Draught-proofing system. They didn’t have drought-proofing back in the day and this has a massive impact on noise pollution and heat retention, a win-win!
