The Top 4 Leadership Qualities you can't lead without.

Last week, during a workshop, a leader asked me what I thought were the most effective qualities and intentional behaviours for leaders – those you cannot lead without!
I typically refer to a list of eight, but he told me I could only have four!
So, this week, I thought I’d spread the love and share the top four from my list with you—plus a practical tip to help you develop each one.
Here they are:
1. Courage
I believe that as a leader, parent, coach, or difference maker, you need courage to make the tough calls, to be transparent when things are hard, and to stand up for what’s right—even when it’s uncomfortable. Courage allows you to take risks and push through challenges, especially when the path ahead isn’t clear. It drives you to step into those difficult conversations and advocate for what you believe in.
How to develop it: Take one small step outside your comfort zone wherever you can. I often set Courage goals and tasks for myself to do each day or for the week, whether it is taking a one-minute cold shower every day or having a difficult conversation that I have put off. The more intentional you are about being courageous, and the more you practice facing discomfort, the stronger your courage muscle will get.
2. Curiosity
It has been well-proven that curiosity keeps you open to new ideas and fresh perspectives. It’s what helps you innovate and adapt. When you’re genuinely curious, you’re always asking questions, learning, and looking for better ways to do things. This kind of mindset is crucial to staying ahead as a leader. It is also a way to build trust and understand the perspectives of your people - a great way to build stronger relationships and better collaboration!
How to develop it: Make it a habit to ask open-ended questions in your conversations. Try asking, "What’s your perspective on this?" or "How would you approach this differently?" It’s a simple way to get new insights and motivate yourself to stay open-minded.
3. Compassion
Compassion is about showing those you lead that you genuinely care about them. When you lead compassionately, you promote trust and create an environment where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to contribute fully. Compassion strengthens relationships, builds empathy, and establishes psychological safety, l

How to develop it: Make it a habit to check in with your people on a personal level. Ask, "How are you really doing?" or "Is there anything I can do to support you?" Showing that you care goes a long way in building strong relationships and deepens the connection.
4. Consciousness
Being a conscious leader means being self-aware and mindful of how your actions and words impact others. It’s about understanding your emotions, your behaviour, and how you show up for your team. This level of awareness makes your decisions more thoughtful and your leadership more authentic and helps you become fully present and aware in the moment, allowing you to respond to situations with clarity and focus.
How to develop it: One approach is to practice mindfulness, like taking a deep breath before meetings or conversations, to centre yourself and stay present. Alternatively, set aside intentional planning time at the start of your day to outline your key intentions and actions. This helps you focus on how you want to show up and ensures that your behaviour aligns with your goals. Regular self-reflection at the end of the day, asking questions like "How did I show up today?" can also sharpen your awareness of how your actions impact others.
Trust these have been helpful in some way, shape, or form.
Until next week, lead well!

1 个月Great list Kylie Paatsch! I find it interesting with so many 'workplace wellbeing' programs out there now that most organisations that lead with these 4 aspects, don't struggle with their culture and employee well being. It all starts with great leadership!
