Top 4 Dangers of Steam Systems

Whilst carrying out a thermographic survey for a client, my colleague and I discovered a leak from one of the steam traps enroute. We managed to capture some video footage and thought it would be good to share along with a great article by UE Systems on the dangers of steam systems....

Here are the top four dangers of steam systems and how to prevent them:

1. Slips and falls

One of the biggest hazards of any steam system is the risk of injury to employees due to slip and fall hazards. On a national scale, slips and falls account for an estimated?$70 billion in workers’ compensation and medical bills, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. This data is supported by research from Martindale-Nolo, which found that the average cost of a workers’ compensation claim for a slip-and-fall accident is?between $17,200 and $27,500.

Prevention tips:?Preventive maintenance of steam systems is one of the best ways to prevent slips and falls at a facility. When condensate is released into the atmosphere, it can quickly make the floor slick. Using ultrasound technology, inspectors can pinpoint small leaks before they would otherwise be visible to the naked eye. Nice pics - or not nice for the client - Just remember this is "just another steam leak" and not what is usually meant by "a leaking steam trap" where the steam is venting into where only the condensate should be going. External steam leaks could be anywhere on the steam line. If in this case your thermal image shows approx 100degC on the left leg, then it seems like the trap is doing its "trap" job, and in this case Ultrasound could not be able to discover if the leak is ONLY external - or also inside the trap to the condensate line. Neat way 2 (or more) technologies can work together. Ultrasound might be able to detect if the trap is still working, but not if it is also leaking internally. Methinks!
