Top 3 trends in airport data management

How are the best airport operations managers succeeding in the data game?

I remember our CEO Kasper Hounsgaard sharing the story of when he joined the Aviation industry in 2009 and was allowed to dive into baggage data at Copenhagen Airport. He shared the expression "It was like being a kid in a candy store" There was an overwhelming amount of data to taste! The question was with all that candy to be eaten - where to start?

From working with more than 40+ airports around the world during the 9 years that Copenhagen Optimization has existed, it is evident that airport teams are still struggling with reaping the benefits of data. There are some current trends and most importantly we see a need for having the right mindset.

The most successful airports work with what they have, recognize what they need, and understand how they can improve for the future.

In a recent paper, we have published a simple guide to the top 3 trends in airport data management.

Trend 1: Data excellence as a driver for operational optimization

Trend 2: Moving from descriptive to prescriptive analytics

Trend 3: Reducing silos. It's all about taking on a holistic and connected approach to airport operations will create immediate value.

The guide is available here: https://campaign.copenhagenoptimization.com/top-3-trends-in-airport-data-management

I hope that by bringing this topic to the surface we collectively can support airport professionals in achieving

  1. Excellence with the data they already have available,
  2. Let data drive the decision-making process and last but not least
  3. Use the data for forecasting to understand passengers better

Interesting what you say about the silos and the holistic view. In my line of work both the availability of (quality) data and having the right use cases in place is something I would like to add to this discussion. All what you are saying is so true, but once in place start using it for the right use cases is even as important!

I've just downloaded this to read later today Sarah F Procter. I'm particularly interested in the combined use of data and ML for predicting customer behaviour with a view to improving experiences.

Thanks for sharing this Sarah F Procter. This transformation in airport data management is more than just an upgrade; it's a complete overhaul of how we think about and handle operations. It's about ensuring safety, enhancing passenger experiences, and staying ahead in a fast-paced world. The value add coming from harnessing data for operational and business insights. Digitalization is indeed the first significant step, moving us from traditional, reactive methods to a more prescriptive, proactive mindset. The real game-changer, however, will be the integration of AI, including generative AI, since that adds two additional elements to informed decision-making - predictive and adaptive. I am sure that's top of your minds too.
