Top 3 Techniques to Increase Your Vendor Base for Government Contracting

Here are my Top 3 Techniques for expanding your Vendor Base - A critical element for success in Government Contracting, especially with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).

Technique #1: Attend Manufacturing Trade Show Events

I can’t stress enough the importance of treating these trade shows like a career fair. Come prepared with your Capability Statement and elevator pitch to network with OEM representatives. These events provide a prime opportunity to connect directly with potential partners who may be able to help you access new product lines and distribution channels.

Technique #2: Partner with OEMs and Tier 1 Master Distributors

Many large OEMs already hold substantial Government Contracts and are required to subcontract a portion of that work to Small Businesses. Reaching out to establish these partnerships can be a strategic way to enter the Government Contracting space, especially if you have Socioeconomic Certifications like SDVOSB, WOSB or HUBZone.

Technique #3: Leverage Online Networking Platforms and Procurement Portals

Platforms like LinkedIn provide access to key decision-makers at OEMs and Government Agencies. Keep your profile updated and engage with relevant online communities. Additionally, utilize procurement portals like DIBBS, SAM.gov, and the Dynamic Small Business Search (DSBS) Tool, to find active solicitations and connect directly with Contracting Officers.

Consistent follow-up is critical when implementing these techniques. Building relationships takes time, but the payoff can be substantial for growing your Vendor Base and positioning your business for success in Government Contracting.
