Top 3 Mistakes I’ve seen in Teaching or Presenting Online

I attended a 3-hour training course online last week. I was exhausted after it and had a headache. While the content was excellent – the delivery did not allow me to learn and implement as much as I could have. After being on lots of zoom and virtual trainings in the last 8 weeks –(who hasn’t right!), I’ve seen too many trainers just try to recreate what they did in the training room and literally dump it online. That just does not work.

I have been training virtually for 7 years and have learned a lot on how to do that effectively.  I realise now that is a skill.

I am also seeing many sales people trying to engage with their clients online instead of face to face. They are trying to do a presentation in the same way they would face to face. These same mistakes apply to those scenarios.

1.       There is no engagement opportunities built in.  You can’t expect people to sit and listen or watch slide after slide and be interested or learn anything new after 10 minutes of trying to stay focused.

2.      It is a one way transfer of information – information dumping as I call it. Our brain is not designed to learn in this way. The principles of brain based learning design techniques are essential. Everything you do needs to be designed to optimise how we are built to learn.

3.      There are no accountability and implementation techniques built-in. Techniques to ensure accountability and implementation are critical. There must be some element of support after the training to ensure you get an ROI on your training. Otherwise, people go back to the way they always did things once they encounter their first hurdle. And the investment in training is wasted.
