Top 3 Lessons on what Super Bowl LVII can teach us about doing Business in 2023

We sat on the edge of our seats as two Titans battled it out. Every time Philadelphia gained points, Kansas City came up right behind them. I'm no sports commentator, but I've seen enough ESPN shorts to know that these two teams delivered an amazing Super Bowl Sunday night to their fans. The Chiefs and Eagles headed into the final showdown with the same record of (16-3). Not only were Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts?a fierce standoff between quarterbacks, we had the privilege of watching two brothers, Jason and Travis Kelce?face each other as well. It was a match to look forward too.

Beyond the entertaining commercials and knuckle gripping anticipation of who was going to take the Vince Lombardi?trophy this year, there were strategic moves by both teams as well as commentary from the announcers on why each was ahead or behind. As a spectator myself, it appeared that some of the lessons on the field could be taken into the realm of the business world for 2023. Many great football legends have threaded parallels between life and sports. Here are the top 3 lessons on what Super Bowl LVII can teach us about doing Business in 2023:

Today's game is all about maintaining possession of the ball.

Translation: Protect your territory. When you're neck and neck against an opponent that could potentially take you out, you need to focus on maintaining your ground. For business this can mean fighting against interest rates, inflation, uncertainty in the market, new or expanding competition, or internally a lack of results. Don't give up what you've already conquered. Customer retention will be key in driving gains when times are tough.

Don't waste your time outs.

Translation: No matter what time it is in the game, you only have so many time outs. If you need to make an adjustment on strategy, pricing, people, or programs there will only be so many opportunities to do so. There will be a time when it's too late to turn the ship around. Keep your coaches (managers) laser focused on when to pivot and how that will make the biggest impact. Too little too late is too late indeed.

It took 20 minutes to turn around a team and win.

Translation: The Eagles were charging ahead during the first half. Patrick Mahomes?was nursing a right ankle injury. By half time the Eagles had taken a 24-14 lead during a late field goal. It did not look like Kansas City would turn it around. However countless hours as a team practicing and playing to deliver results on the field allowed them to double down to gain in the field and ultimately win the Super Bowl. With the right leadership in place and the right players, you can turn it around and win.
