Top 3 Books of The 70 I’ve read in 2021
2021 is a year of exploration for me.
Here are the top 3 books among the 70 I’ve read in 2021:
Most informative: Positioning: The Battle For Your Mind
This is a timeless classic marketing book that describes a revolutionary approach to creating a “position” in a prospective customer’s mind. My favorite chapter is Chapter 20: positioning yourself and your career. The six steps to success include answering important questions like: What position do you own? What position do you want to own? Whom must you outgun? Do you have enough money? Can you stick it out? Do you match your position?
2. Most insightful: No Rules Rule: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention
If you are curious about the unorthodox culture behind one of the world’s most innovative companies, Netflix, this is the book to read. Cofounder Reed Hastings decided to build a culture focused on freedom and responsibility. He set new standards: valuing people over process, emphasizing innovation over efficiency, and giving employees context, not controls. Reading this book helps me re-define my leadership principles and uphold key culture values.
3. Most inspiring: The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race?
Nobel Prize winner Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues launched a gene editing revolution that will allow us to cure diseases, fend off viruses, and have healthier offsprings. Walter Isaacson did a fantastic job portraying this brilliant scientist’s life journey in biochemistry. The most profound part of the book is Chapter 5 where he discusses the issues of ethics as relates to altering DNA. Who has the right? Who controls the rights? Is it right at all??
