THE TOP 3 BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A CAREER COACH

Most people are very unsure about what steps they need to take to either become unstuck, change direction or return to the workforce if they have taken time off and the most common question I get asked is “what is your success rate” and “how does it work?”.  Recognising the fact that an individual needs help from a professional is a big step towards creating the life that they want. However this also comes with a certain sense of trepidation, fear and anxiety towards breaking free from the vicious cycle that has circulated in their minds for months and even years regarding their current situation and how they can change it.

Many people go through the loop of trying to figure out what they want by themselves and become even more frustrated because they can’t seem to work out exactly what it is their seeking.  They write pros and cons lists, search on job boards, LinkedIn and other social media sites and end up back at square one, with no idea what they want to do or how they will change direction.  They go round and round in this thought cycle thinking that the same Google search will magically come up with the answer they’ve been searching for to solve all their problems which inevitably it doesn’t and their levels of anxiety perpetuate.  At this point some people decide they’ve identified that they need external help and go off in search of working with a Career Coach, however that also brings up a myriad of questions, who to work with and how can they help me, being the main ones.

So here are my top 3 tips on the benefits of working with a Career Coach

  1. Career coaching is an investment in yourself

You would normally think nothing of buying a new sofa if you need it, or redesigning your kitchen or bathroom or going on your annual holiday to recharge and refresh.  Working with a Career Coach should be seen as a similar investment since your investing in your long term future happiness. We spend approximately 100,000 hours at work, therefore how we choose to spend these hours should be a number one priority in your life.  Choosing the right Career Coach is essential and therefore it’s always a good idea to talk with a few different coaches to see which one you think will have the approach you need in order to move forward. My business is focussed on practical career coaching based on defining strategies and tools to developing a career search strategy.  Whilst other career coaching businesses incorporate life coaching elements therefore it pays to do your research on who will serve you best.

2. A Career Coach will help you define your Goals, Vision & Values

This is one of the starting points when working with Career Coaches, they will help you define your purpose, mission, values and vision.  Its surprising how many people have no clue when defining exactly what it is they want to achieve in their life. The goals are not just centred around your career, career is only a part of what makes you a whole person, most other parts of your life from a personal, family, education, health and wellness perspective must also be accounted for.  Alongside that a Career Coach will help you define your values and vision, this is critical in taking the first steps towards gaining clarity regarding what you want your future to look like

3. A Career Coach will help you become ‘Unstuck’

Working with a Career Coach gives you motivation to take the necessary action steps to identify exactly what it is you want to do with your life and career.  Many people get stuck in thinking mode, rather than doing mode because they don’t know what the ‘doing’ involves. Career Coaches can help you develop mini career test projects that enable you to take action in the real world, rather than hiding behind a screen, they will then motivate and encourage you to evaluate your progress so you evolve and persevere with your action plan and help you celebrate those small successes that lead you towards living a fulfilling and happy life.

In the words of Theodore Roosevelt “in any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing at all”
