Since posting this article, I have been asked by numerous brands and leaders how we made the selection of the 20 Boldest Marketing Officers:

The primary premise behind Bold Business is to report on companies, institutions and leaders who are positively impacting society and tackling humanities largest problems and opportunities. A major focus of any list we produce is tied to the traits of Bold Leadership, positive societal impact and corporate social responsibility.

Our editorial team ended up using many different sources to find our list of top marketing officers globally. Not one of them came from a company specifically approaching us about having their leader in the article.

Instead, we used our data science team along with our editorial staff to look at different marketing leaders and created a proprietary statical scoring criteria of the of candidates we reviewed against the following elements:

1. He or she has one or more characteristics of a bold leader.

2. He or she has led marketing efforts and campaigns that exhibited one or more of these attributes:

  • Stand-out creativity and storytelling
  • Effective integration of multiple channels
  • Proactive response to a brand crisis
  • Transformation of the brand image through rebranding efforts
  • Delivery of messages that highlight pressing societal issues

3. The company he or she belongs to has experienced growth in either revenue, shares, profit or engagement during their term.

4. The CMO (and their related business) has a focus on making positive societal impacts and advancing Corporate Social Responsibility.
