?? This Week’s Brain Food ??
If you couldn’t tell, I’m pretty hyped about Intersection 2024. I’d like to take a moment to tell you about why it means so much to me personally.
As a kid, I didn’t talk. When I was two years old, I scored in the first percentile of verbal intelligence, so low that they thought I may have had the intellectual development of a seven-month-old. One note from a preschool says that I “pleasantly but adamantly” refused to engage in their testing activities.
This continued until I was about four years old when I finally began speaking, albeit with a debilitating stutter. The stutter was frustrating — I remember so many times when I wanted to say something but knew it would just take too long.
About 95% of children who stutter start before the age of four. The later you start, the more likely it is that the stutter will become permanent. My prognosis was that I’d stutter for the rest of my life.
But I went to speech therapy for years. It was boring and endlessly frustrating, and even though it helped me reduce the stuttering, I still felt slow and clumsy when I talked. So I turned to the only thing that has consistently helped me improve at the things I’m bad at: Practice.
As I got older, I threw myself into any public speaking opportunity I could get. And I noticed that I was getting better and the stutter was slowing me down less and less. I learned to love speaking, so I joined the speech and debate team. I won a speech contest that helped pay for my education. In college, I joined an improv comedy group and gave our commencement speech.
Now, I’ve been able to make public speaking a part of my professional life. For that, I’d like to thank the other speakers, Ross and James, and Intersection 2024’s organizers, Leigha and Aina. I hope those of you who attended got some fantastic takeaways on AI and marketing, but for me, the biggest takeaway was that my decades of work are finally paying off.
