13 Organic Content Mistakes To Eradicate (And What To Do Instead)
This is a LONG read ...? not for the faint of heart.
But if you’re a coach or expert who suspects that your content isn’t conveying the life-changing transformations that take place in your containers …
You might want to save this article.
After 20 years as a Master Writing Teacher + the past 7 years as a full-time copy coach, I’ve boiled down the 13 most common “Content Mistakes” I see in organic marketing …?
If you’re one of the many experts who make these mistakes (and even experienced experts do!) …
Your content may be rendering you “invisible” to those who most need your help.
(Instead of positioning you as an exquisitely one-of-a-kind expert with a powerhouse program unlike anything else out there.)
So if you suspect that your messaging / content isn’t as effective as you know it could be …?
And you want to create staggering demand for your soul’s work with the words you write …
Follow along.
MISTAKE 1 - Content Lacks An Overarching Core Concept
When your content isn’t consistently part of an overarching core concept, mission, or brand message …
→ Your audience isn’t able to clearly or fully grasp how you can help them.
Your content, while informational, helpful, or even inspiring … overall feels “scattered” or “disconnected” to your readers.??
Quite honestly, your readers are not sure who you help, or exactly WHAT you do. You haven’t defined the key areas that you want to be known for as you write about what you do – ?and this not only muddles your message, it also sometimes causes you to drift into Mistake #2 …?
MISTAKE 2 - Fluffy Content
When your content is not keying back to overarching core concepts (Mistake #1), you tend to drift into posting “fluffy content”.?
You’ve been told over and over to “be consistent” and “stay visible” … so you think you HAVE to be posting, posting, posting …?BUT … because you haven’t defined those key concepts you want to be known for,? sometimes you’re not exactly sure what to post.?
Enter:? “Filler” — in the form of “fluffy content”: Those inspirational quotes, blog shares, memes, holiday posts, memories that FB suggests, etc.?
The problem is that this “filler content” (quotes, memes, shares, etc.) … is actually obscuring your message ... and your audience isn’t able to clearly or fully grasp how you can help them.
MISTAKE 3 - Not Creating Context / Curiosity In Your Opening Line
Your Exquisite-Fit Clients may be scrolling by your content, because they don’t see anything in your first line that arouses their curiosity, and / or?that indicates to them that this post is for them.??
There’s no HOOK, no context that gets them to stop and read.
This often happens when you write from the point of view of what you as the EXPERT thinks your reader needs to hear … instead of writing a first line that speaks to what is RELEVANT to your reader (the things she’s already thinking in her head).
MISTAKE 4 - Vague Results, Jargon, And/Or ‘Coachy’ Talk
When you’re vague and/or use too much “coaching jargon”, your readers skim over your content.? They may give it a “like” or “love” to be polite …
But they don’t take further action, because they don’t really connect with your jargon (or know what it really means).?
Examples include saying things like “step into your highest self” or “take back your sovereignty”.?
What does that actually MEAN?? What does it LOOK LIKE to her?? (Write THAT instead.)??
MISTAKE 5 - Not Giving Your Reader Paradigm Shifts??
The job of your educational content is NOT to solve the problem for your readers.?
The job of your educational content is to teach your audience how to think differently about the problem you solve (and the solution you offer).??
^ THAT is what establishes your “authority” in your industry.?
One way this is accomplished is with a type of post I coined the “Epiphany Post” – which is designed to shift her beliefs around the cause of her problem … so that her eyes are opened to how your solution is exactly what she needs.?
Once you start giving paradigm shifts in your writing, your audience will begin positioning you as the “go-to” expert in your field.? (And they’ll actually be ready to BUY your solution.)
MISTAKE 6 - Not “Connecting The Dots” For Your Reader
Mistake 6 is when we assume that your readers “get” the point of your posts.?
You see, when you’re writing posts that give paradigm shifts (see Mistake #5), you’re writing like an attorney – making a step-by-step, logical case to open your potential clients' eyes about a NEW way of thinking about their problem and/or solution.
And at the end of that “case” … you need to SPELL OUT the conclusion you want them to draw.? You need to connect the dots for them – to do the “thinking” for them.
This is NOT because they can’t do the thinking … But rather because, no matter how clear you think you’re being … you’re not always aware of how others may interpret your logic … and what other conclusions they may arrive at.?
Do not leave this to chance.
MISTAKE 7 - No Clear Takeaway
Even if you’re NOT writing a paradigm-shifting post (see Mistake #5 & Mistake #6) … you still need to include a clear resolution statement at the end of the post that spells out what – exactly – you want your reader to take away.??
Avoid ending on vague, directionless statements (even encouraging ones), like, “Remember, you are powerful!” or “You’re worthy of all that the Universe has to offer!” ?
You don’t have to have a call-to-action … but you should reiterate the MAIN POINT …? What was the key lesson?? Are there action steps you’re encouraging your readers to take?? Something you want them to remember??
In other words … what should they DO with the information you’ve presented?
MISTAKE 8 - Not Sharing The “HOW” Of Your Unique Transformative Methodology
I know.? You’ve heard it over and over and over again … “Talk about the outcome, not the process”! ?And, “Tell the WHAT & the WHY – but not the HOW!”?
The problem with that (aside from the ethical issues!) … is something I’ve observed in the last seven years in this industry:?Our audience is becoming much more sophisticated and discerning (which is a great thing!).
So in order to help our more sophisticated clientele to trust us and our process … we now have to go deeper into explaining HOW our process works, how it is DIFFERENT from anything else she’s tried – and WHY it is superior to any other solution our Exquisite-Fit Clients might choose, including doing nothing.?

Don’t be afraid to get really specific in all of your content about HOW you work your magic.?
MISTAKE 9 - Not Growing The “Gap”
When you are sharing the HOW of your Unique Transformative Methodology (See Mistake #8), you must do so in a way that, while specific, also grows the “gap” between what you’ve just taught your readers, and what they actually need in order to solve their problem. ?
So while you want to DEMONSTRATE in detail how your solution works … remember that you have a multi-week / multi-month container for a reason!??
And that reason is that it takes TIME, knowledge, and skill to solve the problem you solve. Your potential clients need your guidance and experience to solve the problem you’re an expert in.?
“Giving it ALL away” in talking about your “how” … is simply not serving them.??
You must “grow the gap” to show them that they actually DO need to work with you to fully experience the transformation you facilitate.?
MISTAKE 10 - Not Making Enough Offers
One thing I hear all the time when new clients come to me is, “I just don’t think anyone can afford my high-end offer.”?
When I ask them, “How often are you talking about it?” The (rather sheepish) answer is usually, “Well ………..”
If you’re not making offers on a regular basis … how do you actually KNOW whether anyone wants / can afford your offer??
And I get it:? You don’t want to come across as sales-y, smarmy, pushy … whatever.?
But remember, only a tiny percentage of your social media followers actually see your posts … so even if you think you’re being repetitive or posting about your offer “too much” …?
It’s very likely that your followers aren’t perceiving it that way at all.
MISTAKE 11 - Not Including All The Information They Need To Make A Buying Decision
If you’re consistently sharing offers on social media, and you’re not getting as many reach-outs as you’d expect …
Then very likely you’re making the mistake of not including all of the information they need in order to make a buying decision when you make your offers.??
With the market being so much more mature … there are certain elements that you MUST include in your offers in order for ideal clients to say “YES!”.?
One sure-fire method to help your Exquisite-Fit Client get to “YES!” without ANY pressure is to create an extremely thorough, transparent piece of writing called an “OFFER POST”.
An Offer Post lays out all of the elements required for your potential clients to process the information, assure that the program is right for them, and move forward by contacting YOU when they are ready (NO “objection handling” required).
MISTAKE 12 - Your Content Lacks “Voice”
Sometimes, your readers are not picking up the emotions that you want them to feel when they read your content because they don’t “feel” or sense your voice or personality in your writing.?
Your writing may sound generic, “off” in some way, or like someone else.
People can “feel” your energy in your writing – and in fact, more often than not, people remember the feeling and energy of your writing, rather than specific posts themselves.??
Remember what Maya Angelou once said:? “At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”?
This works the same way with your writing:? At the end of the day, your Exquisite-Fit Clients likely won’t remember “what you said” in your post … but how you made them FEEL.?
MISTAKE 13 - Your Content Lacks “Balance” ?
If your content ecosystem is centered around “WHAT YOU DO” (offers, results, process, testimonials) … without offering insights, stories, perspectives, glimpses into your personal life …
~~ OR ~~?
If your content is too “YOU” focused (insights, stories, perspectives, glimpses of your personal life) … without enough about your offers, results, process, testimonials …
Your content lacks “BALANCE”.?
If you want to attract those soulmate, Exquisite-Fit Clients, your content needs to be balanced.?
Content is kind of like walking a tightrope … a balancing act.?
Developing your voice, personality, unique stances, thought leadership, and elegant vulnerability in your writing … must be BALANCED with being clear and compelling about what you do, for whom you do it, and how you do it differently.
What Happens When You Correct These Mistakes?
Correcting these mistakes can help you go from?
?? Hearing crickets when you post ?? Followers who deeply engage with your content, sharing & commenting thoughtfully
?? Lots of “likes” and “cheerleaders” ?? Sparking a flood of purchases whenever you make your offers
?? “Handling objections” and hearing “I need to think about it” ?? Receiving DMs asking, “Do you have any openings?”
So What Do You Do Now?
If you suspect you’re making one or more of these mistakes, this is what I work on with my clients daily.
