TOP 10-UOUS #21 X SEB ROYCE

TOP 10-UOUS #21 X SEB ROYCE

Here is the latest in our collaborative playlist series, where I start with a track, our guest adds one and explains the link, then we go back and forth for 10 tracks. This week I'm joined by Seb Royce , Creative Director at Nuevo / Kindeo Co-Founder on an eclectic mix from the past 40 years that takes in electronica, psychedelic soul, pop, hip hop, bona fide music legends and fruit! Happy listening...????

Track 1. Clark "Dolgoch Tape"

Dan: "Kicking things off with one of my favourite songs from last year."

Track 2. Common Saints "Idol Eyes"

Seb: "Oh nice. I like Clark's spacey electronica.? This Common Saints track is on a related psychedelic soul tip.? I have made a few recent mixes with this kind of sound - thought it followed nicely."

Track 3. The 2 Bears "Church"

Dan: "Love that, bassline makes me think of Air’s Alone In Kyoto and general vibes of Khruangbin with a hint of Parcels too, very nice indeed. On to the next, to idolise is to worship and saints have religious connections, so I've gone to Church with The 2 Bears."

Track 4. JIM "Still River Flow"

Seb: "That's a lovely track.? Great Alban-esque vocal, Elbow-type warmth and that hint of steel drums - it's as if they'd all gone on holiday to the Caribbean.??Raf and Jo both came out of dance music.? And?so did JIM - the co-founder of Crazy P.? This is his new personal project which has a more Crosby Stills & Nash vibe."

Track 5. Computer Magic, Danz CM "Livin' In The Moment"

Dan: "That track is right up my street. Can't believe I missed this album last year. So good. Will have to check out the rest. I've gone from magic in the album title to magic in the artist name and with lyrics "going with the flow" also linking back to "Still River Flow"."

Track 6. Paul McCartney, Beck "Find My Way" (watch on YouTube)

Seb: "It gets harder...so many songs to choose from.? Loved that Computer Magic track.? Has a Metronomy feel to it.? Nice.? It was from a compilation and this one is too - Paul McCartney remixed by various people. This is a Beck collab.? Chunky!"

Track 7. Strawberry Switchblade "Since Yesterday"

Dan: "That's great, Beck sounds like Calvin Harris singing in the chorus. Had a bunch of different tangents to take from that one and I decided to go super tenuous: the dice on the cover has rolled on number 5, so I've gone back to the 80s with Strawberry Switchblade's "Since Yesterday" which takes it's opening fanfare melody from Sibelius' 5th?Symphony. Oh, having said all of that I just realised that there is also the less tenuous link between McCartney & yesterday too of course!"

Track 8. Prince "Raspberry Beret" (watch on YouTube)

Seb: "Love that.? Glasgow, ex-goths.? Cool name.? I’m a big fan of 80s music.? My mum used to have the radio on all the time when we were kids.? I have taken a love of pop into adult life.?So…I’m going to take the easy route and choose a song from the same era that has another fruit in the title and is from someone who was a genius in my humble opinion."

Track 9. The Notorious B.I.G. "Juicy" (watch on YouTube)

Dan: "Prince was most definitely a genius, in fact I've said just that in a couple of previous Top 10-uous. If I could only listen to one artist for the rest of time then it would be Prince without a doubt. I also love his songs that were performed by other artists, Nothing Compares 2 U, I Feel For You, Love Thy Will Be Done and Manic Monday. The latter was written under the pseudonym Christopher, which links to my last pick by Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G. with "Juicy" (which also links back to fruit). Over to you for the closing track..."

Track 10. Salif Keita "Madan Exotic Disco" (watch on YouTube)

Seb: "Love that. Great era for rap.? Even has a bit of a G-funk vibe in it.??I’m kind of sad this has to end. So much music to continue sharing. Wanted to finish with something positive.? The only link I am making with Biggie Smalls is that when you drop this track at the end of a party or festival, its B.I.G. : )"

Big thanks to Seb Royce for some fine tunes & tenuous links! ????????
