Top 10 IoT asset tracking use cases

Top 10 IoT asset tracking use cases

ABI Research has newly published that Low Power Wide Area Networks (Sigfox, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE-M) will reach 500 million tracked things in the next 5 years. This is the first research company to recognize that asset tracking is the sweet spot for some LPWA networks (Sigfox, LTE-M mainly).

Here is a ranking based on my perception of the market and the fit with LPWA technologies:

10- Maritime containers

-         Total Available Market: Tens of million containers worldwide

-         Use case: Calculate the Estimated Time of Arrival based on the container arriving at key milestones, in other words in ports where the container has been seen. Inform the logistics company and/or customer when the container has arrived at destination. Monitor the storage conditions inside the container.

-         Why LPWA? The global mobility. For open loops, when the technology allows, this market will soon shift to disposable LPWA trackers.

9 - Consumer luggage tracking

-         TAM: Several billion-baggage checked-in every year

-         Use case: Inform the passenger if the luggage has been boarded and let the passenger know when the luggage is on its way to the carrousel. In case of loss, identify in which airport/terminal the luggage is.

-         Why LPWA? The global mobility combined with the low power consumption properties.

8 - Rental Bicycle tracking

-         TAM: Tens of million rental bicycles

-         Use case: send GPS positions in case of loss.

-         Why LPWA? The market will be shared between Bluetooth powered devices using the smartphone’s GPS and standalone LPWA trackers.

7- Trailer tracking

-         TAM: tens of million worldwide

-         Use case: identify trailers that are underused or have been lost or stolen.

-         Why LPWA? While trucks were tracked by powered cellular trackers, trailers do not have power supply and require battery powered trackers and therefore LPWA is the right technology.

6 - Stolen car recovery

-         TAM: Tens of million forecasted within the next 5 years

-         Use case: retrieve a stolen car thanks to the trace first and a beaconing device then.

-         Why LPWA? Anti-jamming capabilities are necessary

5 - People tracking (Kids & senior)

-         TAM: tens of million forecasted within the next 5 years

-         Use case: A wristband for seniors come with fall detection, panic button, geofencing and geolocation. The data is shared with family members and relevant services.

-         Why LPWA? This market will be shared between cellular and LPWA. Cellular enabling the high-end devices and LPWA the lower end ones.

4 - Livestock tracking

-         TAM: estimated 1 Billion cattle worldwide

-         Use case: Monitor the good health of the high value cattle by tracking its movements. Better pasture management. Avoid loss.

-         Why LPWA? Multiyear battery needed and high cost constraints.

3 - Trolley tracking

-         TAM: estimated 2 billion trolleys worldwide

-         Use case: Locate the trolleys to minimize the fleet of trolleys needed before a shipment.

-         Why LPWA? It requires indoor location inside retail stores or warehouses and outdoor location on the road.

2 - Pallet tracking

-         TAM: Estimated 5 billion pallets worldwide

-         Use case: Monitor the usage of the pallet and pick it up quicker at the retail store to save warehousing space and reduce the fleet of needed pallets. Connecting them also enables to reduce their loss. Finally, we can also monitor the conditions of transportation of the goods on top of the pallet.

-         Why LPWA? It requires indoor location inside retail stores or warehouses and outdoor location on the road. Cost constraints are very heavy as the cost of the pallet itself is already very low.

1-     Parcel tracking

-         TAM: 65 billion parcels worldwide

-         Use case: acknowledge the opening of a parcel at the supposed delivery place and track the parcel through specific checkpoints and logistics hubs.

-         Why LPWA? LPWA disposable trackers have been demonstrated for the first time in 2017 by Sigfox. The industrialization of these trackers will lead to sub-$1 trackers within the next 3 to 5 years.

If you are interested in the topic and would like to meet with logistics professionals and IoT tracking solution providers, Sigfox Connect is the event you should attend on October 25th

Operations expenses contribute a lot to manufacturing costs. With a proper?asset management system?in place, the high expenditure can be controlled?and as in https://www.hakunamatatatech.com/our-resources/blog/make-your-assets-work-for-you-call-it-iot/ when compared to legacy models of asset management,?IoT asset tracking?is cheaper, faster, and better – giving you a competitive advantage if deployed right and quick. Let’s see how it works.

Hi, Interesting use cases and most of them very familiar with Wirepas?too. A nice campaign offers location data for large number of assets with high density and with no problems with metal or other obstacles in the tracked area. Can it be jammed? How reliable is this technology?
