The top 10 in-demand roles for contractors in life sciences - 2025?
In my 25 years working in life sciences recruitment, this period is the one where I’ve seen the greatest demand for skilled workers in comparison to available talent. As confirmed in Hays’ recent European Life Sciences Talent Report, it’s one of the biggest concerns for employers in the EMEA region right now.?
The good news for professionals, however, is that it means there are opportunities in a wide range of areas. In particular, my colleagues and I are seeing more employers seeking contractor solutions. I’ll outline some of the most in-demand roles below.?
Why contracting??
Contractors have long been a trusted source of skills for the life sciences sector, bringing with them experience and niche subject knowledge that many employers need on a short-term and long-term basis. In today’s market, hiring contract workers enables businesses to scale quickly and more easily, so these professionals may have an advantage over those seeking a permanent position.?
Which 10 roles do life sciences employers need to fill in 2025??
10. Qualified Person?
Ensuring the safety of their products is vital for pharmaceutical companies in an increasingly competitive space. Qualified Persons, or QPs, need to have real knowledge of processes and standards, which is why contractor positions are best suited to those with higher education in sciences, as well as experience in compliance.?
9. Quality Assurance Manager?
Consistency is the name of the game for Quality Assurance Managers, whose scope tends to be broader than that of a QP. Organisations need people to maintain and improve existing quality processes, so contractors need to have prior experience of this in their portfolio.?
8. Software Developer?
This role is in a separate field but there’s nonetheless demand for developers in the industry. Strong candidates will be expected to utilise AI tools for greater efficiency, while having the technical know-how to meet the client’s needs. It’s a good idea to have a portfolio (such as on Github) to showcase what you can do.?
7. Cell and Gene Therapy Specialist?
This is another case where specialist skills are really in demand, and so where contractors will find plenty of opportunities. Besides quality assurance, you’ll be expected to ensure that all processes and products comply with current regulatory requirements, and that clinical trials are conducted likewise. You may also be tasked with optimising these processes before training permanent staff.?

6. Bioinformatician?
Bioinformaticians use technical skills to play a crucial role in advancing our understanding of biology and developing new therapies. At Hays, we’re seeing lots of demand for analysts who are available as contractors and, though it’s not the only responsibility in this job, it’s certainly a big part. Candidates who can manage databases and interpret the information will stand out.?
5. Data Scientist?
Businesses need people who are comfortable working with large datasets from clinical trials and other sources. Working with other people across the organisation, such as biologists and clinicians, you’ll interpret the results of the studies and offer findings to inform future steps. A contractor in this role should be a strong collaborator and able to communicate effectively with different stakeholders.?
4. IT Security Consultant?
It’s estimated that cybercrime will cost organisations $10.5 trillion this year. This could happen in a number of ways, from ransomware to data breaches. In order to defend data and intellectual property, as well as protect their reputation, businesses need experts in cybersecurity. Expect to carry out penetration testing and use cutting edge AI tools.?
3. Sales Representative?
To succeed as a contractor in a sales representative role, you’ll need to get up to speed quickly so you know the products inside and out. You’ll already need to be strong at building and nurturing relationships, as well as understanding how any partnerships have progressed to this point.?
2. Quality Assurance Specialist?
A QA Specialist will bring their expertise to the table by developing control systems and carrying out audits. To meet client needs, you’ll already have developed skills such as attention to detail and analytical thinking.?
1. Regulatory Affairs Manager?
At number one, an experienced Regulatory Affairs Manager should be up to date on regulatory guidelines, submission processes and compliance standards. Clients are looking for contractors who can manage regulatory documentation and ensure product compliance throughout the project lifecycle. It’s suited to strong communicators with proven project management experience.?
