Generative AI

"Generative AI", a term not that fancy but has the capability to transform the way the world is moving or working. It is the new buzz of the town and is destined to unleash a productive wave and affect numerous industries positively or negatively.

Advanced AI applications like ChatGPT , GitHub Copilot, and Stable Diffusion have fascinated users, showcasing the intricacies and convenience of their functions. This swiftly progressing technology stands as the fastest-growing category of applications. As data availability grows and AI systems, alongside human monitoring, detect and address errors such as unexpected "hallucinations," accuracy should be enhanced. But, these advancements may also introduce unpredictability.

Would this Technology be a Boon or a Bane to the Industries Worldwide?

Generative AI, being the hot topic or the hero of the current market, has numerous beneficial aspects and could give tremendous outcomes to every business sector. But as we know, something that makes the work easier could also make a fuss. During MIT’s Generative AI Week on November 28, iRobot co-founder Rodney Brooks cautioned against overly optimistic views of emerging technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. He stated, “No one technology has ever surpassed everything else".

If we talk about the positive side - Numerous companies are investing heavily in this technology, integrating it into their operations. For instance, HCL and 维布络 unveiled Gen Labs , with Wipro committing USD 1 billion to AI solution development. Sedgwick, a leading global claims administration services provider, successfully incorporated OpenAI's ChatGPT, dubbed “Sidekick,” into its claims system, aiming to enhance its claim-handling process and elevate customer service.

Notably, generative AI has the potential to reshape work dynamics. Current generative AI and associated technologies could automate tasks that currently occupy 60 to 70 percent of employees’ time, a notable increase from previous estimations, according to a report by McKinsey. As per the recent IDC Survey titled "Future Enterprise Resiliency & Spending Survey Wave 2, March 2023 (FERS)," the utility sector ranks second globally in planned investments in generative AI for 2023, with 40% of respondents, surpassing the average across industries, which stands at 24%.

Thus, it can be said that numerous industries are adopting generative AI to revolutionize their workflows and boost productivity. Adding more to the positive side of its acceptance, it is witnessed that several national jurisdictions are increasingly providing guidelines for integrating and using advanced generative AI technologies, signaling a widespread acceptance of this high-tech innovation.

However, the surge in automation driven by generative AI raises concerns about potential job displacement, security breaches, privacy issues, etc., it is believed that this technology would also have some crucial negative effects across the globe. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed worries about the risks associated with advanced AI in an interview with ABC, acknowledging its substantial benefits, but also highlighting unprecedented risks that society may not be fully prepared to handle. He cited worries about disinformation and economic shocks that could exceed current preparedness levels.

Future Prediction for Generative AI

It is just the beginning of the Generative AI era, and what it would bring in the future is still a fantasy - positive and negative impacts remain uncertain, leaving both companies & experts with lingering questions.

While the benefits of this technology are promising, realizing its full potential would take time. Business and societal leaders face significant challenges in managing the risks, preparing the workforce with new skills, and adapting core business processes to harness generative AI capabilities. Thus, this technology would be one of the leading aspects for every industrial sector, owing to its high acceptance & ability to transform the working style.
