Everybody is pretty familiar with the fashion industry's toxic reputation by now. The industry is widely touted as the second largest polluter in the world, with global supply chains still rife with systemic social issues and an overconsumption and resulting waste problem that is not getting any better anytime soon.
Sustainability seemed to take a bit of a backseat whilst the pandemic raged and seems to have been somewhat sidelined again as global economic issues grow.
But there are many Brands that have not been disheartened by this lack of attention on sustainability, in fact many have responded by leaning in even more.
Here is my take on who they are:
- HOUDINI - they have a restaurant that serves food grown from their composted clothing they take back from customers. I worship them.
- Nudie Jeans - the quiet achievers, they have been transparent about where everything they sell is made and how it is made for years. Humble leaders.
- R.M.Williams - yes to natural materials, yes to quality and craftsmanship in design. Love what they are doing to support regenerative farming.
- Vivobarefoot - ok a little bias here, but show me a Brand doing more to make their business and their products regenerative for people and nature
- Inditex (Zara) - controversial but they have been driving the elimination of toxic chemicals from the industry harder than most and that's no small feat
- Burberry - they have a commitment to biodiversity restoration that anchors throughout the business all the way into products and runway. Love that.
- Assembly Label - home town favourite. Minimalist and mostly natural mono-material designs. Fighting for it all in a tough market for customer demand.
- Timberland (VF Group) - they have been strong advocates for regenerative materials now for a while and require ligit to-farm LCA data for decisions. YES
- Nagnata - Ok, I love wool. I think it's one of the ultimate sustainable fibres. It's natural, renewable and biodegradable. What's not to love. Go Nagnata.
- Dinosaur Designs - More accessories than apparel but DD design stuff that that makes people FEEL nature and therefore, love it. They do it well too.
Special Mentions: Patagonia. Stella McCartney. The OG groundbreakers..
There is a lot of personal preference in here, with mine towards larger brands that hold the lion's share of influence on the market over smaller designers.
With the recent release of science-based targets for nature I look forward to seeing more from these Brands and others to regenerate nature in fashion.
