Tools of Titans: Peter Attia and Supplements (and other things)
This section started off talking again around the ketogenic diet. The more I read this book the more I see a pattern in top producers and the way they live their life. Again, this isn't the "just eat meat" side of keto. It's the science behind it that is intriguing.
Peter is an ultra-endurance athlete (the dude has swam 25+ miles before). More significantly he has an MD from Stanford and has a bachelors in mechanical engineering and applied mathematics from Queen's University in Ontario. So he actually understands the science behind what he is talking about.
There was a lot of different exercises in this section based around your lateral movement and how important having strong hips are for your long term mobility.
His advice to everyone above the age of 40 is that you have 4 bullets to dodge if you want to live a long life. Heart disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke), cancer or neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer). You actually have a 70-80% chance of dying from one of those four things. So a lot of his advice that he gives and his diet/exercise routine is around preventing them.
4 supplements he recommends NOT to take are:
- Multivitamins -- they contain a bunch of stuff you don't need and not enough of what you do need. My friend who is a pharmacist told me this last year (shout out Mason) and I haven't taken a multivitamin since.
- Vitamins A and E -- he isn't convinced you need more then what is naturally in your food.
- Vitamin K -- if you eat leafy vegetables you are good. If you don't you may need to supplement this.
- Vitamin C -- if you have a sufficient diet you are getting enough vitamin C. It isn't sustainable to take mega-doses outside of when you may be ill.
Last but not least, if you are trying to lose weight the common misconception is that you need to do a lot of cardio. People will attempt to run long distances to lose weight which ends up damaging your knees if you aren't already a runner. He goes on to explain that high intensity weight strength training is a better bet to lose weight safely and do less harm to your body. The more you know!
