Are we too obsessed with “tools” – AI, models, tech this, tech that? Are we overlooking the most sophisticated tool at our disposal – ourselves.

Some tools are game changers, others are not. A good tool makes things easier and better – it frees us, the human, to focus more on the things only we can do – connect with other humans being the primary one.

However it is not the tool that changes the game. It’s how we use the tool that.

?

And herein lies the problem.

You already know not to slice your bread with a chainsaw – wrong tool however skillful you are with a chainsaw.

But what about AI as a tooI? I hear that people are using AI to author articles for their clients. But surely clients want to hear from you – your thoughts, your words, however awkward – warts and all.

?

AI surely has great potential in creating financial and risk models, but we need to be cautious. As Nassim Nicholas Taleb said: ‘You’re worse off relying on misleading information than on not having any information at all. If you give a pilot an altimeter that is sometimes defective, he will crash the plane. Give him nothing and he will look out the window.’

If you remove too much of the human element and rely too heavily on the AI, then what?
