“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the lights get in.” - Leonard Cohen
The best way to advance society is to make a small crack in the existing order. People devote their entire lives searching for cracks in the existing order that can bring about social change, promote justice in the legal system, and foster innovations. Although cracks in socio-political boundaries are often celebrated, cracks in technology, such as the advent of ChatGPT, can be met with skepticism. Yet, recent developments in the GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer) show a promising outlook - as a crack that can broaden the boundaries of human knowledge.
The foundation of our knowledge is built on cracks. Throughout history, some of the most intelligent scholars have devoted their lives to finding a crack in human knowledge's boundaries. Once a crack is left in the rules and principles of our ancestors, our universe shifts. The common belief that the Sun orbited around the Earth was debunked once Galileo discovered the heliocentric model of the universe. Such discoveries are only possible with the help of technology. With the telescope invented by Galileo in the early 1700s, creating a crack in the geocentric belief system of human knowledge was possible. Tools like telescopes have accelerated our ability to challenge the limits of human knowledge, altering the course of history. This is the potential that GPT possesses.
To make a crack, two preconditions are needed:
1) a gap in existing knowledge
2) the correct direction to pursue
Unfortunately, finding the right direction equals the time spent crossing out what’s not working. What if we could reduce this repetitive, frustrating aspect of building knowledge and help you focus on what’s more important? This is precisely what GPT can do. It is a tool to send you directly to the boundary of human knowledge.
A significant innovation in the accessibility of human knowledge

ChaptGPT can help the pursuit of knowledge in several ways: Information Retrieval, Summarization, Text Generation, Responding to Questions, Text Classification, Information Extraction, and Referencing.
The advantage of using ChatGPT is its quick and efficient retrieval of information. Whether searching for a specific topic or hunting for relevant scientific papers, ChatGPT can help you find the information faster than any traditional search method.
An additional appealing feature of ChatGPT is its capability to simplify intricate details into a comprehensible and easily-digestible form. This can be particularly beneficial for researchers reviewing large numbers of scientific papers. Of course, it would benefit anyone looking to absorb a massive amount of background knowledge of a topic in a limited time.
ChatGPT can also draft paragraphs on the topic of your choice, which could be incredibly useful for writers, bloggers, and researchers. Whether you're looking for inspiration for your next piece or seeking a fresh perspective on a familiar subject, ChatGPT can assist in generating new concepts and pinpointing the perfect words to articulate them.
ChatGPT answers questions on many topics, from specialized knowledge to general queries. Unlike traditional search engines, it can help you find the information clearly, without any preconditions required for the research.
Finally, ChatGPT can help you categorize and extract information from unstructured data, including many texts from websites and social media. Collecting and processing this type of data is time-consuming and often tedious, so such automation can simplify labor-intensive tasks.
In a nutshell, ChatGPT is a powerful tool to help us expand our knowledge of the universe just as Galileo’s telescope did hundreds of years ago. Yet, people must be mindful that all tools have inherent limitations are embedded in using GPT technology such as fake references, limited in-depth knowledges, and inaccurate math capabilities. Hence, universities, publishers, or any other entity working in the knowledge industry should be aware of the guidelines to maintain integrity in research and writing when using GPT models.
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
