I bet you are an Amazon Prime member, not because I’m clairvoyant, but because half of the US is. Half! Did you know that three-quarters of all product searches begin on Amazon, not Google, or a search engine? Or, did you know Amazon is valued at $1.6 trillion, and has become one of the fastest growing B2B companies in history, with Amazon Web Services. Or, that Amazon’s projected 2023 revenue is $780 Billion – with a B.

My guest on this episode is the expert on the Amazon Way. He literally wrote the book on it.?John Rossman is a former Amazon executive and now Managing Partner at Rossman Partners, and is the author of?The Amazon Way?book series. John is an expert in leveraging the?Amazon leadership principles?to help others innovate, compete and win in the digital era as he teaches business leaders and founders how to be like Amazon.

We ended with a discussion as to whether Amazon has an Achilles Heel as John wrote that Bezos himself predicted that Amazon would go bankrupt one day. Tune in to hear John’s very straightforward response.

John’s counsel on leadership, strategy and innovation is fundamental to living his life in full, and serves as a tool box for us to lean from as well.

Be sure to tune in on your favorite platform, or if you’re not into podcasts, read all about it on my LinkedIn Influencer post.

To Keep People from Procrastinating, Don’t Give Them a Deadline - New research suggests that people will complete tasks faster if you tell them time is limited but don’t offer a specific deadline. The reason? When a deadline is provided, people often procrastinate until it draws near.

"Richard Feynman was fond of giving the following advice on?how to be a genius. You have to keep a dozen of your favorite problems constantly present in your mind, although by and large they will lay in a dormant state. Every time you hear or read a new trick or a new result, test it against each of your twelve problems to see whether it helps. Every once in a while there will be a hit."

There Is No Formula for Happiness - While research has much to teach us about how to live a happier life, it’s important to remember that trial and error play a crucial role. There’s no one-size-fits-all formula. So don’t be afraid to try new things, taking note of how they make you feel.

The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life?by David Brooks - How do we build a life full of joy and meaning as we get older? David Brooks argues it comes down to four things that shift as we gain wisdom and experience: family, vocation, philosophy or faith, and community.

Discipline is Destiny: 25 Habits That Will Guarantee You Success - by Ryan Holiday

The Adversity Quotient - The fact is, everyone wants to win. To succeed. To have things work out just as we had hoped. Yet, one of life’s greatest paradoxes is that the greatest victories rarely come from success alone. Instead, they come from the moments when you are challenged, get knocked down, and bounce back up.

Tools for your Career

Don’t Focus on Your Job at the Expense of Your Career - To set yourself up for a better job in the future, it’s best to focus on opportunities that align your current role with the position you desire. To begin implementing this strategy, create a Venn Diagram. In one circle, list your current responsibilities; in the other, describe the job you want in the future. Seek out opportunities that overlap.

This one is here because I cannot help myself. I am a big fan of Stewart Brand, have been ever since I bought my first Whole Earth Catalog (basically a print version of the web in 1969). The?WE ARE AS GODS?documentary is now available to rent or purchase. WE ARE AS GODS offers a deep dive into the many sides of Stewart Brand—creator of?The Whole Earth Catalog, an influential member of Ken Kesey’s “The Merry Pranksters,” and founder of the modern environmental movement. Brand’s approach to his work and life influenced many, including Steve Jobs, who have gone on to shape our modern world. Now in his 80’s, he looks to leave a legacy for the long-term future with his efforts to resurrect ecosystems through de-extinction. The man who coined the phrase “we are as gods and might as well get good at it” is now under fire from former allies who believe he’s gone too far, but Brand won’t be easily deterred from a mission he feels is necessary to save the future of the planet.
