Tools for Change - February 2022

Welcome to the latest Edition of Tools for Change – A Convenient Digest and Curated Collection of Information, Tools and Resources to Help You in Your Life and Work

I’m all about change and adaptation, and of course, the requisite tools. So, in a meta-aspect, this newsletter is changing.

The initial focus was pretty pandemic-centric and, honestly a bit long to read.

So, while we’re staying true to our provision of tools, our curation is moving beyond just the public health aspects of Covid, and leaning in to briefer points with links for readers to do deeper dives where there’s an interest.

The idea is a curated, monthly digest of tools that can help you live your life in full and be of help to others. That said, you will continue to see a set of always free, open-source tools supporting DIY Humanitarianism as well.

We’re open to your questions along with your suggestions for “Tool Boxes” you’d like us to add. Thanks for subscribing, and please share and encourage others to subscribe as well. Thanks. Chris, Editor

On Living a Life in Full

February’s Guest on my podcast is none other than April Rinne. April is equal parts global authority, advocate, ally and adventurer. She spent the first half of her career focused on global development and financial inclusion, and the latter half on the “new” digital economy and the future of work. For more than two decades, she has seen emerging trends early, understands their potential, and helps others do the same.

Her new book Flux: 8 Superpowers for Thriving in Constant Change is part personal guidebook, part strategic roadmap, and part blank canvas for discovery, Flux provides a refreshing, unconventional take on navigating change today and far into the future. Each of the eight Flex Superpowers helps you see differently and ground you in your truth. Our conversation is not to be missed if you want to learn how to be empowered to thrive – no matter what changes come your way.

We have a great discussion of the eight flux superpowers, which she calls a “Bento box for the mind.” Tune in on your favorite platform.

To Find Clever Solutions, Think Subtraction Stuck on a problem you can’t seem to solve? Research has found that people don’t always consider these solutions, even though they’re often more effective.(Source:?Ars Technica)

How to Problem-Solve While You Sleep Our brain can work on problem-solving while we’re asleep. But how do we spark these “Utility Dreams”? For starters, spend some time thinking about the problem you want to solve before you go to sleep. Then, revisit the problem the following morning. (Source:?Slate)

Keep Brainstorming: Your Best Ideas Are Still to Come There’s a myth that the best ideas arrive quickly. But new research shows that’s not true—and encourages us to press on for more and better solutions. (Source:?Northwestern)

Finally, please learn about the Free Research on COVID-19 from APA Journals. APA Publishing is committed to sharing the latest psychological research on COVID-19 with the public. They invite you to browse their free collection of articles published across the APA Journals portfolio. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, psychology experts across the field have provided critical guidance and support to communities in need. Many APA editors adopted a rapid review process during this time, to ensure that timely, peer reviewed research was made available to the public as quickly as possible. This is very generous of APA and demonstrates editors’ and scientists’ work and dedication to the field, as well as that of their reviewers and those involved in getting this crucial research published quickly. Their frequently updated collection, you will find articles on the behavioral and public health, bias, discrimination, and equity, economic stress and mental health, education, training, and distance learning, healthcare personnel and other frontline workers, international perspectives on COVID-19, stress, anxiety, and grief, and telework and telepsychology. In Closing

And even though I know our readers are very smart, I nevertheless have to say that this newsletter does not provide medical, psychological, legal, financial, healthcare, or any other form of advice. As I have said elsewhere, don’t be a knucklehead.

Thanks again Chris! I love your shift from problem to solution. Many of your items remind me of what I wrote in my book Paging Dr. Within. I'm in the process of re-writing this book into smaller better books. Wish me luck! Paging Dr. Within: How to Become, Be, and/or Make a “Patient Listener” and/or a “Super Symptom Checker” - describes the Concepts of a "Patient Listener" and a "Super Symptom Checker" – Human, Technology, and/or Technology-Assisted Human – Considering the "Big Picture" around Health and/or Symptoms. – Ebook and/or Paperback- https://books2read.com/u/mBgJnA
