Most workplace accidents are caused by a breakdown between workers and one of the other 3 basic areas- tools, materials or methods. These accidents can be prevented by making sure that all workers understand what are considered unsafe actions and conditions.
Unsafe Actions
Deadlines, stress, poor attitudes and lack of skill can all result in unsafe actions on worksites that lead to accidents and injuries. A few careless moments may have long-term consequences for those involved, so it is important to recognize these hazards before something goes wrong. Some unsafe actions are:
- Operating tools, machinery, and other equipment without authority or proper training and/or safety gear
- Working at an unsafe speed
- Using unsafe or defective equipment
- Using equipment in an unsafe manner
- Disconnecting safety devices
- Unsafe unloading, placing or mixing materials
- Assuming an unsafe position or posture- especially when lifting heavy objects or performing a repetitive motion.
- Working on or around moving equipment
- Horseplay or distractions; taking shortcuts.
- Failure to wear and use personal protective equipment- hard hats, safety goggles, steel toed shoes, safety vests, etc.
Unsafe Conditions
Sometimes the work environment itself can pose hazards for workers and lead to accidents. Watch out for unsafe conditions such as:
- Improper guarding on tools and machinery
- Defective equipment or materials- known hazards must be taken care of immediately
- Unsafe working procedures
- Improper housekeeping- slip and fall accidents waiting to happen.
- Poor lighting or ventilation
- Improper personal attire
- Lack of proper site evaluation
Common sense is often the best tool in preventing workplace accidents, but it doesn’t hurt to have a dedicated safety coordinator on the job.
