This Too Shall Pass

I am two weeks after double knee replacement surgery and while I would like to say recovery has been easy, it had not. It has been a bit of a struggle, mostly because my super strong and healthy caretaker, Kathy, became very sick as well. We were a sorry looking duo with me and my knees and her just feeling awful. We were the “powerless” couple…??

The physical part of the rehab has been going well. My pain was manageable, and I was increasing my steps and range of motion everyday. What blindsided me was the lack of sleep. I had no idea this would be an issue, and it was a big issue. For five days in a row, I was getting around two hours of sleep a night. I had wonderful intentions to be super creative, get a lot of work done, and maximize my time, but that is impossible with no sleep. In reality, I was only able to do the bare minimum, which was to exist. Thankfully, I am at the tail end of the sleep deprivation and the last two nights I have broke 4 hours??. Even better, Kathy is feeling better and even back to training today.?

Every hardship comes with a lesson, and this experience is no different. For me, it was reflecting on time. I knew the first two weeks were going to be hard, and they were, but I also knew it was only for a short time. I realized I wasn't getting sleep, but it is only temporary, and it would improve. Still not there yet, but getting better.

In my head it has been like running a marathon. Every mile you pass is done, and won't have to repeat it. In this case, every day gets me closer to feeling and sleeping better. It's only a matter of time. The same thing happened at a much larger scale with the pandemic. Things were really tough, but every day we got through the day, it was a day closer to the other side. It is acknowledging progress and knowing that we are closer to the destination that keeps the drive to move forward. At least it works for me. So when there is a hardship or challenge you face, it is most important that we remember, this too shall pass.?

Happy living!

Your sleep was affected because your usual daily movement and activity changed drastically and rapidly. Your endocrine system is adjusting neurologically and hormones , chemical balance is accustomed to a much greater active lifestyle. Besides the fact you had major surgery which is traumatic to the body ?? It will normalize…and as you say…”It shall Pass”! Always inspirational Chris!!! Stay Strong!!????????
