Too much sodium in the blood is called hypernatremia. This acute condition can happen in older adults who are mentally and physically impaired who do not eat or drink enough, or who are sick with a high fever, vomiting, or infection that causes severe dehydration

In hypernatremia, the level of sodium in blood is too high. Hypernatremia involves dehydration, which can have many causes, including not drinking enough fluids, diarrhea, kidney dysfunction, and taking diuretics

Hypernatraemia most often occurs in people who don't drink enough water. This is usually because of impaired thirst or mental judgement. Examples include someone with dementia or an infant who has limited access to fluids.

Symptoms vary based on the condition's severity, but include thirst, restlessness and fatigue.

Treatment may include drinking more water or intravenous fluids

Symptoms of Hypernatremia

  • Muscle weakness.
  • Restlessness.
  • Extreme thirst.
  • Confusion.
  • Lethargy.
  • Irritability.
  • Seizures.
  • Unconsciousnessreatment of moderate hypernatraemia due to water deficit

  • Replace water deficit over 48 hours in addition to daily maintenance, with IV sodium chloride 0.9% and glucose 5% (see table for rates)
  • In addition, replace ongoing losses mL for mL (excluding urine) with IV sodium chloride 0.9%
