Too Much or Not Enough

Too Much or Not Enough

I often hear people say that they’re “tired of talking about” a certain issue. In my experience, usually the issue has not been talked about enough. Here are some examples:

·      “When are we going to stop talking about the ways that the Native Americans were treated by the United States?”

My Response: We’ll stop talking about it after we’ve talked about it enough to understand the realities of the Native American genocide and experience.

·      “I’m tired of hearing about racism in the United States.”

My Response: We need to talk MORE not less about the realities of racism and privilege in our culture.

·      “Why are we always talking about problems with education? The education system worked for me.”

My Response: Things have changed and it’s time for a new conversation and a different model for education.

·      “I’m tired of hearing about problems in the inner city. I live in the suburbs and it’s not my problem.”

My Response: The issues in our cities are real and relevant for all of us. It’s time for more engagement from everyone.

The next time you hear anyone talk about the need to stop talking about something, ask whether we’ve even started the conversation. In many cases, it’s time for more talk, and more action!
