Is it too late to start writing my book at this stage in life?
Day 10 of 30 Bestselling Book Tips for Writing Your Life Story
I was 49 when I published my first book. I had the dream of being a writer since middle school, but something always seemed to get in the way.?? I was chasing waterfalls, building a career, getting in and out of relationships. The same is true for many of my clients. Work, family, and fun usually distract us from creative pursuits, especially in a world that is so expensive and requires so much of our time and energy just to survive.
If you feel like you may have missed the boat when it comes to pursuing your writing dreams, you’re not alone. But the truth is - that’s nonsense. History is full of examples of authors who embarked on their literary journeys later in life and achieved remarkable success.
Like Frank McCourt, whose wrote "Angela's Ashes" and won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography/Autobiography. McCourt didn't publish his debut book until he was in his 60s, after years of teaching and reflecting on his upbringing in poverty-stricken Ireland. His poignant storytelling resonated with readers around the world, demonstrating that it's never too late to share your unique voice with the world.
Another late-blooming author, Harriet Doerr who wrote "Stones for Ibarra" was published when she was 73 years old. Despite not starting her writing career until later in life, Doerr's novel won the National Book Award for First Fiction. Her late-in-life success serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the timeless quality of storytelling.
Age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing your passion for writing. Whether you're in your 20s or your 80s, the desire to share your stories and experiences is timeless. Writing is a journey of self-discovery and expression, and there's no expiration date on creativity.
In fact, starting later in life can offer unique advantages. With age comes wisdom, life experience, and a wealth of stories waiting to be told. Your perspective is valuable and worthy of being shared. Embrace the opportunity to write your story, no matter where you are in life, and let your words inspire others to do the same.
