Is it too late to start uploading?
Today, I answer your question about how old is too old to be a creator...with advice from Jordan Matter (18M+ subscribers).
Q: I'm 31 years old with only 24K subs on YouTube after trying for years. I'm struggling tbh and everyone I see crushing it on social is like a teenager. Am I too late?
- Nia Navarro
A: Imagine being 57 years old and wondering the same thing.
That's the story of Jordan Matter — who at 57 is one of the oldest YouTubers with over 10 million subscribers.
Even more impressive, Matter only made the jump to full-time creator a few years ago
“I knew what I was good at. Then I just found a way to entertain people while doing that,” he said.
For Matter, that was photography. For years, he got paid to take professional headshots.
One day, he wondered: could he make his photo sessions entertaining enough to be watched as a YouTube video?
That’s how Matter's “10 Minute Photo Challenge” was born.
The format is simple: Matter tries to get as many shots of his subject in crazy poses — from gymnasts mid-flip to acrobats soaring — in 10 minutes.
In other words, he takes us along the journey of the photo. Instead of just posting the final result as most photographers do.
“Photography becomes secondary to the entertaining process of getting the photos," he said. "By turning them into challenges, dares, or pranks, I can make it about entertainment.”

The format also made it easier to collab with others, which led him to make videos with Charli D'Amelio, Addison Rae and more.
More importantly, it laid the foundation for Matter to collab with his daughter Salish, which led to pivoting his channel to focus on making videos together.
But had Matter not spent years honing his photography skills, it would've been harder to translate them into entertaining formats for YouTube.
Bottom Line: Entertain with your existing skills. Use your age to your advantage.

$9bn+ in sales. I build brands that customers chase after. If you're done wasting ad dollars, let's talk. Make your brand a magnet, not a money pit.
1 年Lean in to what you have. For some people it's amazing creativity, for others it's experience in the field. Whatever it is, carve out an unmistakable identity with it. Don't just be visible. Be unforgettable.?Thanks, Jon.
Love this! The way people are delighted at accounts like retirement house or other twelve bazillion influencers over 60 with engaged, interested followings, is a testament to the way ageism hasn't squashed our delight in those who have lived longer than us. And stats show they can sell products too. Love a mature creator ?? Maybe there's something in the way older creators have a certain ability to speak honestly and with less censorship or self-consciousness that hits, too.
