Too Cool for School: Implementing Agile Techniques in Your Skincare Management System

Navigating the Journey to Skincare Success

During my time in the financial industry, I became certified in the Agile Methodology—a project management approach focused on iterative development and responsiveness to change. In simpler terms, Agile is about being adaptable, emphasizing customer focus, and continuous improvement to deliver greater value faster. I incorporate these principles into my business to help clients achieve their desired skin outcomes more efficiently.

So, how does this tie into a skincare management system? It might not sound as serious as terms like Scrum or XP, but it’s just as important—because we’re talking about your skin!

Consider this:

  • Your skin is the largest organ of your body.
  • It protects against external factors.
  • It regulates body temperature.
  • It stores water.
  • It acts as a sensory organ.
  • It helps produce vitamin D.

Many aspects of Agile resonate, but a few key elements stand out in my practice at Urban Beauty Source: the kickoff meeting, discovery, stand-ups, and continuous feedback. Let’s explore how these Agile principles can be applied to tailor your skincare experience and help you achieve your goals!

Kickoff Meeting

Think of the kickoff meeting as the "what, who, when, where, and how" of your skincare management system. This same approach should be reflected in a complimentary consultation. I’m often surprised by how many clients purchase products and receive services without having one. How can you set yourself up for success if you don’t know exactly what you need and whether your beauty professional can help you get there?

This consultation should be an informal get-to-know-each-other session. One thing I look for is compatibility. As a business owner, I started this journey to have fun while doing what I love. If you don’t enjoy laughing and chatting while we work on your skin, we might not be the right fit—and that’s perfectly okay!

Discovery

Preparation is key! Don’t be that person who shows up unprepared. Do your homework and educate yourself. Do you know your skin type and specific concerns? What do you hope to achieve, and are you ready to invest both time and money?

Have you been honest about your lifestyle with your beauty professional? They’re there to help you, so don’t hold back. The more they know, the better they can address your unique needs. Share all the details—current skincare, medications, treatments, lifestyle habits, goals, and budget. These details are essential for crafting an effective skincare plan.

Using the right terminology is also important. If you tell me your skin feels rough, and I ask how you exfoliate—chemically or mechanically—can you explain? Don’t be the one who thinks they’re too cool for school. Do you want to lighten or brighten? Do you prefer physical or chemical exfoliation? Clear communication is vital in establishing realistic goals and expectations.

Stand-Ups

What progress meetings have you established with your beauty professional? Are they in-person or virtual, and how often will they occur? It's important to have benchmarks to track your progress. Documenting before-and-after photos and keeping a journal are great ways to monitor your skincare journey. Don’t be the one who shows up unprepared—bring your photos and be honest about your outcomes.

This is where adaptability comes into play; be willing to embrace the journey. Many clients worry about “breaking out” after starting a new routine, but it's crucial to understand the difference between a breakout and a purge. Can new tools and techniques be added to the routine? Or is there a product you just don't like? It's cool. Is the smell? Is it how it feels on your skin? Be proactive and be able to articulate that.

Continuous Improvement

Once your skin is popping and you’re thrilled with the results, do you just go about your merry way? Absolutely not! Pull out your planner and schedule quarterly stand-ups with your beauty professional, especially during seasonal changes. Continue your discovery process; life is always changing, so keep tracking your progress. There may be revisions or updates that could enhance your skincare management system.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s common for clients to seek quick ROI from their skincare. While we all want results fast, it’s essential to realize that our skin didn’t get to its current state overnight. It took years of environmental exposure and lifestyle choices.

While minor changes may be visible sooner, significant results often take at least 90 days. This is where tracking your progress is crucial. What is your baseline? What indicators will you use to measure improvement?

We hold our beauty professionals to high standards, expecting exceptional results. But how are you educating yourself to partner with them effectively for your skin’s success? The journey to healthy, radiant skin is a collaborative effort—let's embrace it as a valuable learning experience together!

This is a refreshing perspective. It proves there’s jargon in every field, beauty is no exception.
