Should you carry a weapon

I think one of the most commonly asked question when running workshops or training courses is should I carry a weapon. That may surprise many of you but as the media play on our fears then this is becoming a much more common question. In fact lately its often already happening and the comment is no longer ‘should I’ but ‘I carry this.’

For an organisation that can be a significant headache and not an approach they would want to encourage. So Lets look at some of the weapons people talk about in workshops and why they may not be such a good idea.

?

Now in the UK, the law, is actually quite strict on the carrying of items that could be used or considered a weapon. That may not be the case around the world but the UK is highly restricted. Yet again the media may make that seem very different with video and pictures of assailants with knives, guns or other weapons.

Tactical Torches.

With the term ‘TACTICAL’ becoming more common it seems like adding tactical in front of anything makes it more appealing to many and also more expensive.

Following a post I did about Tactical pens on LinkedIn, I received messages asking about tactical torches. What they were and if they were worth the money. For our friends over the water a torch is what you know as a flashlight.

Check out this video to give you a quick heads up on Tactical Torches.

Spoiler alert, YES I do have a tactical torch, in fact I have 2 different ones.

What is the Asset you are trying to protect

The commute to work may now be 3 or 4 days rather than the traditional 5 but your people are still at risk

What is important to your organisation.

Is it the people, the IP, the reputation, or something else?

You need to understand what is the asset you are trying to protect. Once you know then its time to identify the most effective plan to ensure the organisations resilience.

Often this understanding comes following an incident putting the organisations effectiveness at risk. That could be an assault on one of the people, theft of a laptop, a terrorist attack or an incident that makes the news or a blog.

If you need help assessing your risk and how to protect your most important assets then drop me a message.

For the first 10 years of my career in security industry, I was licensed to carry a firearm and deliver lethal force if I believed that either myself or the people around me were in danger. I love the quotation by Abraham Maslow: if you have a hammer then every problem you have is a nail. If you have weapons available you will use them. Well put Tony Willis MSc MBA MSyI FCMI
