Tony Robbins | Overwhelmed? Let Me Show You the Power of Leverage

“You can push the boulder yourself, have someone else do it, or you can do what I do: use leverage. – Tony Robbins?

Earlier this summer I talked about how I “do it all” .?

Many of you reading this are business owners, executives, parents, caregivers, and teachers who struggle to maintain a work/life balance.?

You have career goals and aspirations, but you also want to spend time with those you love most AND feel good while doing it!?

Today, I run over 110 different companies, speak to over 1M people at a time, push the envelope on cutting-edge innovations for real-world problems, train my body for mental and physical fortitude, and still find time to experience precious moments with the ones I love most.??

But this wasn’t always the case. Earlier in my career I really struggled to find time to do it all, let alone enjoy the process. ?

So, I created a specific system I use for designing my life .??

While I’ve developed this system over a four-and-a-half-decade career, there’s one tool that is an absolute must for anyone looking to extract the most out of life.?

Let me introduce you to leverage.??

This is a principle for maximum achievement.??

And don’t be fooled by thinking it’s the same as delegation. A lot of people will tell you that you need to delegate to succeed and get more done.??

It’s not true.??

So, what’s the difference??

When you delegate you are giving someone else an action or result without any follow up.??

How many times have you delegated something to someone, only to check in the day it’s due and find that it’s not complete? Or it hasn’t been completed to your standards? They missed the mark.?

And how do you feel when this happens? Frustrated.?Maybe you make up a story that you have to do everything yourself...?

And you’re left feeling even more overwhelmed. ?

Delegating is inefficient for both people.??

Let me explain further...?

If I have a giant boulder, I can use a lever to move it.?

It doesn’t take much; just a small movement and I can move something incredibly large.?

That’s the difference between delegating and leveraging.??

When I leverage, I am still a part of the process. I didn’t just give it away.?

I’m still helping move the boulder.??

3 Keys to Leverage??

To ensure I’m maximizing leverage to the fullest, there are 3 keys I use. Here’s how you can use them too:?

  1. You and the person agree on the OUTCOME??

  1. You and the person agree on the WHY behind the OUTCOME?

  1. You and the person agree on when it’s DUE?

And if it’s a long-term project I schedule three times to check in.?

I don’t wait for the night before; I schedule ahead.?

Delegating is passive and weak.?

Leveraging is life changing.??

It’s working with another individual to produce a result and you’re still responsible for that result.??

When you leverage, you get the results you want AND people want to work with you because they feel supported.??

Two Suits?

I’ll tell you a story about how I first learned to leverage in the early days of my career when I was just getting started. ?

I had multiple events scheduled to speak at in the same day.??

At this time in my career, this was very exciting.?

I drove my tired Volkswagen to the dry cleaners to pick up my two suits before heading to the airport.?

There was a long line at the counter, and everyone was moving slowly. I watched the clock as the minutes dragged on and I started to sweat.?

Finally, I got my two suits, packed them up, and headed to the airport for my flight.?

Sitting on the plane, I couldn’t help but think, this is so stupid. That was so much stress. I’m still sweating from the experience. There must be a better way.?

When I experience ongoing stress, I want to solve it.??

Now, if I had had more money at the time, I could have just bought more suits. Or hired someone to pick them up.??

But that wasn’t an option, so I decided to leverage another person.??

So, what did I do???

I traded.??

I had skills that other people needed. I gave them access to my events and in turn they picked up my dry cleaning prior to me having to leave for an event.??

But I didn’t just delegate. I made sure this person was supported. They knew my schedule and if any changes arose, I made sure to check in with them in advance. ?

We had touchpoints along the way until it was a smooth process and eventually less communication was needed. ?

And because of that I had more time to create, do what I love, serve more, and grow my business.??

Leveraging in Your Own Life?

Take a moment to think...?

What are some things in your life that you could leverage to someone else today??

What’s something you don't like to do either because you’re not good at it or you just don’t have the time???

Write them down.?

What are a couple of leveraging outcomes that could give you more freedom in your daily life??

The outcome is to alleviate what you have on your plate so you can do more of what you love.??

How many hours a week could you save using leverage to be available for your kids, friends, spouse???

For being playful???

For an evening of laughter???

For a moment of joy??

It doesn’t matter where you are financially. Anyone can leverage. Everyone has something someone else feels is valuable.??

Here’s to creating more space to do what you love!?
