Race in America 2021: "BURDEN" Film Screening and Discussion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
with Nathan Hale Williams, Richard E. Pelzer II, and Linda Dunbar
Thursday, February 25 | 7:00PM Virtual Program | Hosted by Wendy Gerber
Join us for a screening of the compelling film BURDEN followed by a fireside chat with the forces behind “Activism through Storytelling,” Nathan Hale Williams and Richard E. Pelzer II, and Diversity Decoder CEO & Founder Linda Dunbar in discussion with Wendy Gerber.
We’ll take a close look at what it’s like to be well-educated, successful, and Black in America through BURDEN, a 20-minute film that follows the life of a Black American family man and financial advisor, Bennett Lewis.
Written and Directed by Nathan, with Richard as Executive Producer, the film was inspired by the high-publicized incidents of everyday injustice in recent years, particularly the occurrence at Starbucks when two young men were arrested for asking to use the bathroom while waiting for a business contact to arrive. The film is designed to give viewers of color the opportunity to experience validation and to allow white viewers to experience a life they may live adjacent to but never really thought about. The director himself has personally experienced many of the microaggressions depicted in the film. Linda has been working to make the film available to corporate and non-profit audiences through diversity courses.
During Black History Month, this program is a chance to view an award-winning film and reflect upon and discuss anti-Black racism in a meaningful and compelling way.
This program is sponsored by the Princeton Club of New York and co-sponsored by Princeton Association of NYC, Princeton Arts Alumni, Princeton Club of Southern California, Princeton in Hollywood, Association of Latino Alumni of Princeton, Association of Black Princeton Alumni, and Asian American Alumni Association of Princeton.
