A Review by Mojdeh Tabatabaei ??????? ???? ????????

Perhaps no genre has ever associated photography, painting, sculpture and cinema as much as staged photography did. It is shaping an independent and different artistic trend which is not initiated by a post-modernist thought but by the domestic   restrictions on photography and art.

Nevertheless, Soroush Milanizadeh is an exception to this generalization. As an artist with a personal style in photography, by contemplation on the relationships among people, he has endeavored to express his own social views while avoiding political attitudes and journalistic approaches. Photography alone did not satisfy him and in order to communicate his thoughts he has also applied movies, video-art and performances. The perpetual essence of his artworks is “Women” and what is associated to them. The further he goes in his career, the more aspects of his ideology and perspective he uncovers. His passion for painting is evident from his previous works too. As he explains about the series “Renaissance Out of the Frame”: “My fervor for European renaissance paintings and exploring the effigies secrets of that era fed into my creativity. It was an opportunity to reproduce my perception of social life and the current human situations in a renaissance painting setting”. In “Eve’s Desire” series, he gracefully and boldly frames pregnant women as if they are outcrying their inner wounds behind their heavy abdomens by perspective deflections.   The present series looks into another dimension of violence against women which is rather familiar to them. The one that has not been seen, at least in Iran staged photography history: “Woman against Woman “Every woman becomes the victim of another woman at some point in her life and it is not a strange feeling for her. He points out:

“Women, the ongoing suffer and violence we are used to! Thomas Hobbes said “Man is a wolf to man”. This understanding has been highly proofed throughout history. Meanwhile when it is examined about women, a deeper reality surfaces. This series is a selection among 611 well-known western paintings with stories behind their creation. By the same approach, it is to take a deeper look at the adversity women are doomed to indulge by studying their situations and conditions all through history regarding documented records and to reconsider their current life and outward changes.  Could this intertextual and inter-historical view be an honest wake-up call to their eternal agony which has just metamorphosed in appearance over time?!Men’s action against women, women’s action against women and women’s action against themselves. The narrator portrays himself frame by frame and rips off himself and his corpse avails him right. Would it be a woman against another woman?”

This profound sociological look along with psychological attitudes make us view these artworks far beyond mere technically flawless photographs of Soroush Milanizadeh.
