Tomorrow

Tomorrow

The Broadway musical “Annie” features a catchy theme song, “Tomorrow.” An upbeat and catchy tune tells us that when we feel down, there is always tomorrow. But in life, today’s inaction may bring tomorrow’s loss. A theologian wrote a book after surveying the Bible to identify significant words in Scripture. He sought to find the saddest word and the happiest word. In doing so, he identified the most dangerous word as “tomorrow.” Why is that? Tomorrow has deprived many visionaries of their goals and dreams. Delayed action has hindered students from achieving their educational success and scholarship opportunities. More importantly, procrastination has prevented more men and women from coming to Christ than any other word in our dictionary. The belief that “I can do that in the future”creates a false sense of urgency, leading to today’s hesitancy. This is a favorite tactic of Satan, who delights in the mindset of “there’s no hurry, I have tomorrow.” Conversely, the word that is dear to the heart of God is “today.” Luke 9:59-62: Jesus said, “Follow Me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” Jesus was not being insensitive. His message means “let the spiritually dead bury their own dead,” literally. The term “spiritually” reflects Jesus’ true intent. Regarding the plow, looking back signifies prioritizing earthly concerns over God. Some people, upon hearing the gospel, delay in their decision. This is the most dangerous type of procrastination. Life is brief, and we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. James 4:14: “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Many don’t react when God calls, thinking of other tasks they desire to do first, and may lose the ability to hear God’s voice. The Bible urges us to get right with God today. Hebrews 3:13,15: “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. As has just been said: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…” The most significant aspect of procrastination is that it can prevent us from serving God and achieving success in life. And ultimately, lose the opportunity to enter heaven. Procrastination creates the fallacy that we have control over tomorrow, disregarding life’s inherent uncertainties. If we could guarantee that tomorrow would arrive, we might be able to set aside today’s opportunities, believing we could seize them at a later time. Yet, the unpredictability of tomorrow makes procrastination a perilous choice. To say, “I will do it tomorrow,” is to assume we have tomorrow. Proverbs 27:1: “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” ?“Today” is God’s word. God wants to bless us, and if we take the steps He asks us to take, salvation and eternal life with Him will be ours.
