Tom Foggin for RIBA National Council

The RIBA can be so much more than a professional institute. Peer support, shared experience and the knowledge network of members is one of its greatest strengths, and that strength lies in us: grassroots architects across the UK.

There is a national role for the RIBA in lobbying government and promoting design quality. It is effective in some areas, for example the Awards programme, but there is more the RIBA could do to support architects.

As National Council representative, I would hold the RIBA to account to ensure it acts effectively - nationally and locally - on the issues that matter. I am acutely aware, as a practising architect, of the challenges we face; for example the Planning system is broken, fees and procurement are serious concerns for practices, and Climate Change is the biggest crisis we face.

Architects are on the front line tackling these problems and, whilst national lobbying is a start, the RIBA needs to provide more support at local level: engaging with local authorities to solve issues with Planning, and promoting the value of architects to clients, enabling us to quote fair fee levels.

Equally, the RIBA needs to support and inclusive profession open to people from all backgrounds, ages, and routes to the profession so we can work for the benefit of wider society. I aim to provide a fresh voice on Council for the views of architects, and future architects, in the East region to ensure the RIBA works for all members.

I will work hard to represent our interests as a diverse profession. Every RIBA initiative, programme, or event, should be able to answer the simple question: “How does this benefit architects across the UK?”

Tom, are you standing for a National Seat or a Regional Seat? I hope you and others can help the RIBA move in one single direction, as too many people look to push RIBA in their direction following their own agenda, which over the years has achieved very little results for members. The RIBA needs long terms goals, and less "Grand Ideas" by people in short term roles, that solely benefit their own CV. If you commit to working with others, with your ambitions, you have my vote.

Hi Tom, when you say “hold the Institute to account”, who do you mean and how do you intend to do this?
