Tolerating Emotional Weather Conditions In Business

Tolerating Emotional Weather Conditions In Business

It’s meant to be Summer in the UK. But you’d never have guessed it. Because... I’ve been switching from pink T-shirts to black polo-necked sweaters, back to pink T-shirts just to cope.

I know, Brits secretly love to talk about the weather. But today it reminded me that my moods can feel like a really bad weather forecast:

“…Dark clouds expected with drizzle and occasional sunshine...”

When I'm feeling anxious, negative and down. Trying to avoid writing an article, record a video and in a general state of analysis paralysis. It’s really tempting to try and push the negative emotions away ...and power through business stuff.

WRONG THING TO DO!!!

So do you wanna hear a little secret of mine? And this is going to sound counter-intuitive (so humour me).

EMBRACE YOUR BAD MOOD

…have you ever thought about embracing them? Because the real power and personal growth lies on the other side of 'Mood Mountain.'

The skill is developing the resilience and courage to live for longer and longer periods with the ‘negativity.’ Plus reminding yourself over and over that:

The bad internal weather forecast will improve (this too shall pass).

Bad internal weather conditions change. Tolerating the discomfort becomes a valuable counter-intuitive coping skill because it reduces anxiety and increases optimism.

Tolerating the uncertainties and the mysteries of life means practicing and resisting the urge to ...immediately rush in and fix things.

I'm not saying it's easy. But widening your window of tolerance is possible.

The right practices, and guidance helps you work out what deeper subconscious beliefs drive your - rainclouds - lightning and - thunder-bolts.

4 Ways To Change A Bad Emotional Forecast

1. Alter Your Environment

You’d be surprised how much your surroundings impact your mood. Try rearranging your furniture, adding some vibrant colours, or switching up where you work. Small changes can break negative loops and spark a whole range of positive feelings.

2. Intermitment Technology Fast

How often do you find yourself lost in the addictive hypnotic doom scrolling? Take a break, get away from the device or better still put it in the freezer (only joking!). Whether it's for a few hours or a whole day …step away from screens. Lower your stress levels (your body is feeding off adrenaline and dopamine) and boost your overall happiness.

.3. Flip Your Routines

If your mornings are usually slow, pump them up with some high-energy activities. Or if they’re typically hectic, slow down and find a moment of calm. Changing your usual pace and cadence can re-boot your mind, physical energy, and make your day a whole lot different.

4. Use Humour to Deflate Negative Thoughts

Never underestimate the power of laughter and fun, and ...not taking yourself so seriously! Remember the tantrums thrown by tennis superstar John McEnroe? ("You Can-not Be Serious!!"). Watch a funny show, read a light-hearted book, or play a silly game. Laughter lightens your mood, and gives a fresh perspective to whatever’s weighing you down.

Keep these strategies in yer back pocket.

Rooting for you every step of the way.

You've got this!
