We have no problem with the critics but we’re here to share news and opportunities in Africa.
Minister Sandra Ablamba Johnson launched the 2023-2024 Human Development Report in Lomé, titled ‘Breaking the Deadlock: Rethinking Cooperation in a Polarised World’. The ceremony followed a global launch by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on March 13, 2024, and was attended by government officials, development partners, and civil society representatives.
The report highlights Togo's significant progress in human development, with its Human Development Index (HDI) rising from 0.539 in 2021-2022 to 0.547 in 2023-2024. Togo maintains its top ranking in the UEMOA region and ranks fourth in ECOWAS, behind Cape Verde, Ghana, and Nigeria. Minister Johnson attributed this progress to resilient economic performance and bold governmental reforms led by the President.
From 2014 to 2023-2024, Togo's HDI has increased by 13%, reflecting substantial government investment in social sectors. The country is nearing the 'average human development' category with an HDI of 0.550. Key contributors to this progress include an increase in gross national income per capita from US$2167 to US$2214 and a rise in life expectancy to 61.6 years.

This progress opens up several opportunities for Togo. There is potential for increased investment in education and health, with enhanced partnerships between the government, NGOs, and the private sector to improve these services. Togo's stability and growth make it an attractive destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) in various sectors. Additionally, the progress in human development provides a strong case for increased international aid and grants, particularly from organizations like the UNDP and World Bank.
Minister Johnson thanked the UNDP and other partners for their support. UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Binta Sanneh commended Togo's progress and affirmed the UNDP's continued support for the country's inclusive and sustainable development efforts. By leveraging these opportunities, Togo can continue to build on its progress and ensure sustainable and inclusive development for its citizens.
