A Maharashtra-based non-government organisation, Wildlife SOS intends to cover 40-50 open wells across the state to reduce the risk of falling for wild animals.
Wild animals who used to live deep inside forests have started to stray into residential areas giving a rise to human-wildlife conflict because of loss of habitat and depleting forest covers.

Madras HC grants living being status to ‘Mother Nature’
The Madras High Court in a recent order declared “Mother Nature” a Living Being with all corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a living person.
The Madurai bench of the HC invoked the parens patriae jurisdiction and placed immense importance on conserving nature, while dealing with a petition from a former Tahsildar-level official.
The order said: “It is right time to declare/confer juristic status to the “Mother Nature”. Therefore this Court by invoking “parens patriae jurisdiction” is hereby declaring the “Mother Nature” as a “Living Being” having legal entity/legal person/juristic person/juridical person/moral person/artificial person having the status of a legal person, with all corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a living person, in order to preserve and conserve them.” The order also accorded Mother Nature the rights similar to “fundamental rights/legal rights/constitutional rights for their survival, safety, sustenance and resurgence in order to maintain its status and also to promote their health and wellbeing”.
The petitioner sought to quash the disciplinary proceedings against him for allegedly granting patta (land deed) for government land classified as “Forest Poramboke Land” to certain individuals.

Trees essential part of people’s lives, can’t be cut needlessly: Delhi HC
Stressing the need of protecting trees in cities, the Delhi High Court has observed that trees, that form an essential part of people’s lives, are not allowed to be cut needlessly or wantonly.
The observation came after advocate Aditya N. Prasad, petitioner’s counsel in a contempt case informed the court that a tree is cut down every hour in Delhi under official sanction.
“This is a worrying issue because on the one side, the endeavour is said to be underway to maintain and augment the green cover of Delhi while simultaneously fully grown trees are allowed to be cut down. This self-defeating exercise by the Forest Department, GNCTD needs to be arrested at the earliest,” he argued.

Sewage Treatment Plant not working for 6 years, waste piles up on 45 acres: Haryana
A sewage treatment plant (STP), built at a cost of several lakhs near Mirzapur village falling in the civic limits of the city, has not been functional for the past over six years. It has led to the accumulation of sewage waste on 45 acres, adversely affecting both the living conditions and the ecology.
The filthy civic conditions that have developed in wake of constant release of untreated waste have left the villagers at a receiving end.
“Instead of providing relief, the STP has emerged as a source of constant pollution and unhealthy civic conditions, forcing some families migrate to other localities. I am among the ones who have shifted out,” says Narveer Yadav, a former resident.
