Today's HR - Limitations & Overcome
Human resources (HR) is a vital function in any organization, but it also faces many challenges in today's dynamic and complex business environment. Some of the most common HR challenges are:
- Recruiting and retaining talent in a competitive and diverse market
- Developing and engaging employees for career growth and performance
- Fostering a positive and inclusive organizational culture that aligns with the values and goals of the business
- Ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations across different locations and situations
- Managing employee health and well-being in times of crisis and uncertainty
- Leveraging technology and data to optimize HR processes and outcomes
These challenges require HR professionals to be strategic, agile, and adaptable, but they also expose some of the limitations of the traditional HR model. The classic Ulrich model, which divides HR into three roles: HR business partners, centers of excellence (CoEs), and shared services, may not be sufficient to address the evolving needs and expectations of employees and employers.

HR business partners may lack the time, skills, or resources to keep up with the latest HR trends and best practices, or to provide tailored solutions for different business units. CoEs may be too rigid or siloed to respond quickly and flexibly to changing situations or demands. Shared services may not be able to deliver high-quality and consistent services across different platforms or channels.
To overcome these limitations, HR needs to adopt a new approach that is more customer-centric, agile, and collaborative. This may involve:
- Redesigning the HR roles and structure to better align with the business strategy and customer needs
- Developing the capabilities and competencies of HR professionals to enable them to deliver value-added services and solutions
- Empowering HR professionals to make data-driven decisions and leverage technology and automation to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
- Collaborating with other functions, stakeholders, and external partners to co-create innovative and integrated HR solutions
- Measuring and communicating the impact and value of HR on the business outcomes and employee experience
By adopting a new approach, HR can overcome its limitations and become a more strategic, agile, and impactful function that drives business performance and employee engagement.
