US GDP and Presidential Debate
There are two major events in the US today. Around 1.30pm UK time, we will see US economic growth data for Q1. This is the final figure for that period and the markets expect the annual growth figure to land at 1.4%. It is not stellar but it is positive and many believe Q2 will be stronger. We will also get the weekly jobless numbers today, which are likely to reflect a flattening out of fresh claims. Later this evening, we will see a live, no-notes and no-audience debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. That will likely be a lot more interesting than last night’s Sunak v Starmer bore-fest. Can Biden get through without looking too old to govern and can Trump look convincing without a studio audience? We shall see. As for the USD, as at this morning, GBP/USD is in a slight upward trend at $1.2640 (at interbank rates) and the EUR/USD rate is flat at $1.0695. Things may be very different by the morning.
