Today's actions...

Today's actions shape tomorrow's world...

Two years ago we ran events called Innovations in Hospitality hiring. The events helped more than 25 hoteliers in Chicago and 21 in Washington DC hone in on better hiring and retention by sharing thoughts and actions with others. Essentially they were mastermind groups.

Some of the best takeaways from the events are below ??

  • Weave empathy into your culture
  • Offer to cross-train for internal hires
  • Keep candidates engaged (and hire FAST)
  • Match/beat non-hospitality comp and WFH flexibility
  • Leverage employer branding on social media
  • Target your marketing with culture-specific criteria
  • Go hyperlocal to get- and give- community buy-in
  • Support marginalized and non-traditional candidates
  • Re-open stalled collaborations (unions, city, etc.)
  • Recruit- and learn- from outside the hospitality industry

These have not changed much at all... but possibly gotten worse.

Why this matters:

I made some changes in the last few months that affect change. Personal and professional changes that give me a better long-term fit.

As I continue to talk to hiring managers daily, a few things still come up:

  • They do not have the time to hire or fill multiple roles.
  • They are overwhelmed with how many open roles they may have.
  • They have to handle Executive and Hourly roles as well as other tasks.
  • They are being pulled in 50 different directions as all leaders are.

So hiring, while it may seem a little better, is still the largest struggle facing many.

This has caused me to change Innovations in Hospitality Hiring to Twelve2823...

It has also created exciting and disruptive Recruiting & Retention Mastermind groups.

I use the term hiring managers because it is not ONLY the HR department's challenge to staff the team, or at least it should not be.

So anyone who assists in hiring in a company can join.

Why masterminds?

Essentially these are a gathering of individuals who come together to share knowledge, skills, and experiences to mutually support and challenge each other in achieving their personal and professional goals.

For Twelve2823, I want them to focus on what I love the most and what has always been needed...Recruiting and Retention.

Traditionally masterminds are for Entrepreneurs or Owners but these are built to help improve a company's hiring for now and into the future and are designed for hiring managers.

Here are 5 reasons they help:

  • You learn from others and talk about hiring challenges, wins, and losses.
  • Improve accountability and time management around hiring and retention.?
  • You learn what is and is not working from other hiring managers and how to institute it.
  • You will streamline processes & Decision-making
  • You will be able to keep up with industry trends and KPI's that affect hiring and retention.

When you learn this from your peers, it helps improve the bottom line.

It shows you what others could be winning and losing on.

It helps you not feel alone.

It helps you grow as a leader.

It helps staff your company more efficiently.

Who are they for?

They are designed for all hoteliers...but here is the rub. The Innovations in Hospitality Hiring events were built around micro markets in one city.

Twelve2823 will be built around the following and will hope to have groups in each category BUT not in one location, but nationwide to better learn from others. They will be virtual.

  • Full service over 400 Rooms?(Big Box Hotels)
  • Full service under 399 Rooms?(Medium Sized)
  • Limited Service/Focus Serviced
  • Extended Stay
  • Boutique/Independent

Each one of these needs to hire differently and have different aspects of the recruiting and retention process they focus on, but we can learn from all of them.

In a traditional mastermind, you have leaders from different industries to learn from. In these masterminds, there will be different brands and locations, allowing for more of a fluid transition to networking and understanding of style and problems.

How will they work?

Each group will be limited to 8-10 hiring managers. They will be one day a month for 2 hours.

They will also have a 15-minute check-in with John Carpenter and a message board.

Each mastermind will play off the last and each member will share wins, losses, and struggles and the group will work with each other towards bettering everyone.

Events

We will also be hosting events such as networking hours, LinkedIn Lives, and virtual classes to help the greater good.

Our first LinkedIn Live will be coming up in April. It will be on The 5 things to think about when hiring for your sales teams. It will be hosted by John and have an engaging guest many of you already know.

I am excited to share this with all of you and help the education of hiring and retention in our industry.
