Today is World Water Day
This year, the United Nations’ World Water Day aims to enable global citizens to ‘see’ groundwater and take a personal view, stance and action.??
Groundwater is the 99% of liquid freshwater on earth that is held below the surface within soil or rock. Harnessed at its best, this invisible resource could provide critical benefits to ecosystems and communities around the world. To do so, we must do our utmost to protect it from pollution and overexploitation.?
“Groundwater - making the invisible visible” is the official theme this year and as the management of this invaluable natural resource is closely linked to climate change impact, we would like to show our support by sharing easy access links to the numerous resources that will be made available throughout the week:
1. The UN-Water’s flagship report (aka WWDR) is available for download via unwater.org. Published by UNESCO and entailing sustainable water policy recommendations for decision makers, this is certainly a helpful tool to have in your own SDG repertoire
2. Watch the below video to find how the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is promoting the production of new groundwater whilst protecting existing sources “So there’s more in the tank, for all of us.”
3. ?Last week the National Ground Water Association and The Groundwater Foundation celebrated the 22nd National Groundwater Awareness Week in the USA with plenty of educational and inspiring events organised throughout the country.?
4. Within Europe, the European Commission’s CIS Working Group on groundwater offers a plethora of excellent resources to support the strategic implementation of the Water Framework Directive > click here to find out more.?
5. To help educate our younger generations about the importance of water, take a look at the abundance of teaching materials for all ages on the Twinkl platform > browse via this link.
If you’d like to contribute to World Water Day 2022, then get inspired by winners of the groundwater photostory competition launched by Water Science Policy to create a one minute video to show how groundwater affects your life and participate in the #MyGroundwaterStory #WorldWaterDay challenge. Below is an instructional video from IGRAC - International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre that explains more on this community-building activity
There are of course plenty of events happening world-wide during the course of the week. Here are some that you may wish to participate in:
Finally, here are just some excellent organisations that we believe are doing great work and contributing to the cause:

Whilst groundwater is not a primary metric of our datasets, we are combining snow expertise with cutting-edge geospatial technology and advanced modelling skills, in order to more accurately predict water flow into hydro dams and hydrological inflows on a regional scale.
These improved forecast insights can range up to four months in advance and would support numerous key areas that are important to industry stakeholders, such as hydroelectricity asset efficiency, trading decision making, due diligence and crucial sustainability efforts.?
You can can find out how we’re empowering hydroelectricity companies to optimise use of water in dams, in our latest project announcement via our website >
We hope you find this article of use and welcome you to add any other water preservation resources in the comments below.
In the meantime, for any questions about what we do:
P.S. If you’re not quite sure what groundwater is or how to make it visible, then we recommend that you watch this video from the l'OSUR (Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers de Rennes):
