If Today Were Your Last Day, What Legacy Would You Leave Behind?

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."?
?
Last week, I paused my regular writing schedule to grieve and honor my mother, whose funeral service was held on what I now see as the ultimate Transformational Tuesday. It was a day of reflection, gratitude, and deep realization about the legacies we build and leave behind.?
Today, as I resume my writing on this unique Wisdom Wednesday—the first day of 2025—I am reminded of the importance of intentionality. This day marks a fresh start and challenges us to reflect: If today were your last day, what legacy would you leave behind??
My mother’s life was an extraordinary blend of resilience, creativity, and service. Through her example, I’ve come to understand how we can transform our own lives—and the lives of those we touch—by leading with purpose, confidence, love and care.?

?? The Power of Resilience and Creativity: A Personal Story?
?
My mother’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of heartbreak and resilience. She bore the unimaginable weight of losing over 100 relatives during the Holocaust, a tragedy that cast a shadow over her life. For decades, she selflessly cared for loved ones, even as she battled unbearable physical pain that would have broken the spirit of many. She faced the shattering loss of her husband in a car accident, a grief that could have silenced her light forever. Yet through it all, she found solace and strength in her creativity, especially in the gentle shaping of clay—her pottery a reflection of the beauty she refused to let the world take from her.?
Even in her 80s, she shaped clay into stunning works of art. Little did I know that less than a month ago when I wrote this article, The Leadership Potter's Wheel: Lessons in Transformation from My Mother's Studio?that she would pass so quickly. Yesterday, as I returned to the pottery studio that I took her to on a weekly basis and held her unfinished pottery—pieces that had been bisque-fired but left unglazed—I was struck by its symbolism: each a beautiful creation, brimming with potential, yet unfinished.?
It made me reflect: What unfinished “pottery” do we all carry in our lives? Dreams deferred? Passions left unexplored? Relationships in need of healing??

?? The Neuroscience of Transformation: Why Emotional Engagement Matters?
Moments of profound reflection, like funerals, activate the brain’s amygdala, sparking emotional engagement that strengthens memory and drives action. Neuroscience teaches us that when we anchor our goals in meaning and emotion, we’re far more likely to follow through with them.?
This connection to our emotional core helps us envision a brighter future and strengthens the neural pathways that inspire lasting change.?

?? Shaping Leadership with Intention?
My mother’s pottery wasn’t just art—it was a metaphor for life and leadership. She often said, “It’s not about forcing the clay into shape, but guiding it to become what it’s meant to be.”?
Leaders, like potters, must balance vision with patience, provide support while challenging growth, and celebrate progress, even if the end result isn’t perfect.?

?? Resilience: The Kiln of Growth?
My mother often said, “The kiln of growth requires resilience.” Just as pottery must endure intense heat to become strong, so must we face life’s challenges to grow.?
Her resilience was forged through personal loss, physical pain, and years of caregiving. Yet she always emerged stronger, her spirit unbroken. Leaders, too, are shaped by the fires they endure, becoming stronger with every trial.?

?? Legacy: Building a Life That Inspires?
One of my mother’s greatest achievements was leading an almost seven-year effort to build a literal wall around her neighborhood community setting a precedent in a city for what would become a more common effort for countless other neighborhoods over the years. This was more than a physical structure; it symbolized her belief that one person could create meaningful change.?
Leadership, at its core, is about leaving a legacy—not in titles or accolades, but in the lives we inspire and the change we create.?
