Today we’re sharing our first-ever Strategic Diversity Management Report

Today we’re sharing our first-ever Strategic Diversity Management Report as part of our annual CSR Report, which reflects our unwavering commitment to our workforce and the communities we serve.

Last Summer, in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd, one of the ministers at a memorial service said, “We [America] are at the intersection of pain and potential.” This really struck me and has stayed with me. I interpreted that statement as our country’s legacy of social injustice and inequity is our pain; our ability to make this more than a hashtag moment is our potential. Immediately following Floyd’s death, our executive leadership team, leaders of our Black Colleague Resource Group (BCRG) and many other colleagues worked to assess the experiences of our colleagues in the workplace, our community impact and how we can best use our influence and voice to advocate for public policy that supports social justice and equity.

As a Fortune 5 company, we recognize that we have an important role to play. We have committed $600 million to advance employee, community and public policy initiatives that address injustice and inequity faced by the Black community and other disenfranchised communities. These investments build on our holistic approach to driving justice, equity, diversity, equity and inclusion for all we serve, which includes longstanding commitments in the areas of employee development and training, diverse supplier leadership, community-based workforce initiatives and collaboration with civil rights and social justice organizations.

To me, the differences and similarities in our workforce are our company’s greatest strengths, and together the nearly 300,000 of us join forces daily to uphold our shared commitment of mutual respect in everything we do. We know that when our workforce reflects the diversity of the communities we serve, our business thrives. And while we know that CVS Health alone cannot erase the toll that 400 years of systemic racism and discrimination has taken on historically disenfranchised communities, we recognize that we have an opportunity to create substantial, long-lasting impacts. We will keep listening, learning and using our influence to be a force for good in all of the communities we serve.

What I can appreciate the most is the transparency in acknowledging the gaps CVS still faces in ensuring underrepresented minorities have seats at the tables, from manager level up to officers of the company. A huge opportunity exists to attract Black and Latino talent, especially as they / we represent key growing and dynamic consumer markets. Proud that CVS is taking a step in the right direction. It shows the humility and commitment required to make real change!
