Special Note: This article is inspired by a conversation with my friend Ken Rusk, who often emphasized the importance of living in the present and taking action today rather than waiting for someday.

In a world brimming with dreams and aspirations, the concepts of “today” and “someday” often stand as silent yet significant markers of our approach to life. While “today” represents the immediacy of action and the present moment, “someday” symbolizes an often vague and indefinite future. Understanding and leveraging the difference between these two can be the key to unlocking personal growth, success, and fulfillment.

The Allure of Someday

“Someday” holds a certain charm and promise. It’s the day when we will finally start that business, take that trip, write that book, or learn that new skill. It’s a comforting thought, offering the illusion that there is ample time ahead to accomplish everything on our bucket list. However, “someday” is a double-edged sword. It often leads to procrastination and complacency, as it lacks the urgency and specificity required to transform dreams into reality.

The danger of “someday” lies in its indefinite nature. It’s a safe haven for our aspirations, protected from the harsh scrutiny of the present moment’s challenges and constraints. But this safety is deceptive. As the days turn into weeks, months, and years, the opportunities to act diminish, and “someday” can easily turn into “never.”

The Power of Today

In contrast, “today” is tangible and actionable. It’s the present moment, the only time we truly have control over. Embracing “today” means prioritizing immediate action over distant intentions. It involves making the most of the present circumstances and resources at hand, rather than waiting for the perfect conditions that may never come.

The power of “today” lies in its potential to create momentum. Small actions taken consistently over time accumulate, leading to significant progress and achievement. By focusing on what can be done today, we break down overwhelming goals into manageable steps, making it easier to start and sustain effort. Moreover, acting today fosters a sense of accomplishment and builds confidence, reinforcing a positive cycle of productivity.

Mindset Shift: From Someday to Today

Shifting from a “someday” mindset to a “today” mindset requires a conscious effort and a few strategic changes in our approach to life and goals.

  1. Set Clear and Specific Goals: Vague aspirations are the breeding ground for “someday” thinking. Instead, define clear, specific, and measurable goals. This clarity helps in creating actionable plans and deadlines.
  2. Prioritize Daily Actions: Break down your goals into daily tasks. Focus on what can be done today to move closer to your larger objectives. This practice keeps you grounded in the present and ensures consistent progress.
  3. Embrace Imperfection: Waiting for the perfect moment often leads to inaction. Understand that perfection is an illusion. Start with what you have, and improve along the way. The key is to begin.
  4. Build Habits and Routines: Develop habits and routines that align with your goals. Daily rituals create a structure that makes it easier to prioritize important actions and reduce procrastination.
  5. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly review your progress and adjust your plans as needed. Reflection helps in identifying what works and what doesn’t, allowing for continuous improvement.

Conclusion

The dichotomy of “today” versus “someday” is more than just a matter of semantics; it’s a fundamental aspect of how we approach life and our aspirations. While “someday” holds dreams in a distant, often unreachable future, “today” empowers us to act now, making those dreams a reality. By shifting our focus from the indefinite promise of “someday” to the actionable immediacy of “today,” we harness the true potential of the present moment, paving the way for a life of purpose, achievement, and fulfillment.

I love how David Allen's "someday" category of project and tasks was actually called "someday/maybe." I had "Learn Spanish" on my someday list for 3 decades -- and then I moved to Spain, and it suddenly jumped into the today list. And now I can complex questions in Spanish and have no idea what people are saying in reply.

Mitchell, there is no time like the present. Time is a non-renewable resource. Use it wisely... especially today!

Mitchell Levy, CCS I love the article ! I always look at two parameters to test if I am under a real "today" or it will become a "someday" promise. ;) - Effort. From 1 to 10, what would the effort be?. - Motivation, From 1 to 10 what would the motivation be? If effort is upper 3 and motivation is under 8, either I change my intention or I will surely go to "someday" ! I test these parameters until I find the lower effort and higher motivation to start Today!
