General Etiquette how to treat persons with disability:
1) People with disabilities aren't victims. Avoid showing pity, show your love and respect. They too are humans like you.
2) When you interact with someone who is blind or visually impaired, always introduce yourself . You may offer your arm or elbow as a guide if they request assistance but never push, pull or grab the individual
3) When you interact with someone with a cognitive disability, speak to the person in clear, simple sentences. Be patient with them and give them time to communicate with you.
4) Do not see they see their disability as a tragedy. Many people with disabilities have worked through the tough emotions to be happy and content with their lives. Don't use words such as "I’m so sorry that happened to you". This will make them more sad. Instead use positive words
5) Make eye contact, never avoid someone with disability. People with disabilities are human beings and their existence deserves acknowledgement
6) Do not underestimate the abilities of someone with a disability.
7) Seek to understand the person and his or her disability before expecting to be understood.
8) When you see any disabled person , rather than asking " what is wrong", instead say " May i ask if this is a life long injury" or" Is this something new"
9) Show empathy not sympathy. If person with disability is sharing with you some of his/her personal story, use word such as " that must have been really difficult to you or challenging you" than showing sympathy.
10) Lastly show them love , respect and never let them at any point your are talking differently to disabled person.
