Unexpected changes sometimes turn into opportunities. Ph: Bacardo

Today I'd like to say Thanks.

A month ago, my reality changed unexpectedly.

I was told that the strategy of the company I was working for was redefined, therefore my “permanent position” was gone, meaning that I’d need to find a new workplace.

I thought that my position was a "long term bet", because it involved sponsorship and huge commitment from both parties. However, overnight my pyramid of needs turned upside down. My priorities changed dramatically and I needed to find a new job quickly.

Was I pissed with them for the decision they made?

Nope, completely the opposite.

In the startup world “reality happens”. Instead of complaining, I decided to convert that energy into something useful.

Being grateful for the opportunity that Everproof gave me was the key to navigate the next steps with a positive attitude. (Thanks Nathan and Andreas).

Looking for a job gets hard if you have a deadline and a series of constraints limiting your choices, in consequence, your funnel of opportunities narrows down quickly. It’s important to use your resources wisely and to be cautious when using your “silver-bullets”.

Let’s be honest, everybody has problems, but it depends on you to transform them into opportunities: talking with people, keeping the wheel in motion, applying for job positions and sharing your profile with recruiters who actually care (I’m talking about you Stefan Welack, Matt Woodard, Aisling Fogarty, Mirella Di Iorio, Jo Corner, Bec Gyner).

In some cases, you speak to people who do not have positions available at the time, but the point is to keep the conversation alive, raise awareness and let them know that you are in the hunting field again.

With this, you are establishing a relationship, not only asking for a job. When you create genuine connections it’s a game changer. Often it’s not about the job search itself, sometimes it’s valuable to chat with experienced people in the field to reassure you that you are on the correct path... even after failing miserably several times.

When you create genuine connections it’s a game changer.

But, how do you make those genuine connections?

This is when your network comes in handy. And yes, you can find people that are willing to help you here on LinkedIn.

Talk with your network, send a message, share the good and the ’not so good’ moments. Ask for help. Being vulnerable is okay, during our lives unexpected things happen, you never know how things will unfold in the future.

Now, after a rollercoaster of interviews at different companies (including getting through three interviews in a single day) failing at some and nailing others, I've decided to be part of the Versent family. (Thanks to Dave Slutzkin, Monica Crusellas, David Angus, Evan McLean, Bec Gyner, Paul Jenkins) I’m so excited for this new challenging position and what the future may hold.

Besides this excellent outcome, the most important takeaway I've learned from this "unsolicited challenge" is that without those who helped me in different ways (listening to my story, asking how it was going, connecting me with their peers, sharing my resume or even crossing fingers for me) this personal growth and evolution wouldn’t be possible.

That’s why today I’d like to say THANKS.

TL;DR

  • Convert uncomfortable situations into challenges to grow your potential.
  • Make meaningful connections with your network.
  • Ask for help, being vulnerable is okay.
  • Opportunities appear once others are aware of your situation.
  • Be grateful, you never know how the future will unfold.
