Today I was humbled, and my tears flowed.

What follows is the report of a loving mother of a young man, who in my estimation, stands taller than blokes thrice his age. And my admiration and respect of a mother who stood by her son when others had given up.

“Hey Alan, this is just sending you a massive thank you. I know I have fucked up a few things in my life, but I managed to do a good job with my son. With your help.

Yesterday a girl in his class posted on a class group chat that things were bad in her world, she had been kicked out of home, by her mum, and her grandmother refused to take her, something had happened and resulted in a therapist appointment, a big fight and she ended up in hospital-while social services worked to get her placed in a refuge. She had already spent 1 night there.

Only 1 kid reached out to her, just 1 handsome young man who told me it was morally the right thing to do.

She spent last night here with us, stressed, scared, upset, still fighting with her mum... but she was safe.

Today social workers have sorted out a plan and she has gone home with supports in place.

Communicating with kids is bloody hard, teenagers are even harder, but thanks to your hard work my son and I are solid. He rang me after offering her help, he knew I would support him.

The work you do is sooooo important. Never doubt yourself.

This year I have been acknowledged as a finalist in 8 awards and won 3 so far. But what you have read above means much more to me than those awards.

In the 10 years that have passed since I profile this young man, his mother continued to apply what I showed her, hence what they have achieved together. And on the other hand, over the same time, thousands of our youth have taken their lives, tens of thousands have attempted suicide, and countless numbers have continued to self-harm and feel worthless, while it doesn’t need to be.
