Today I Can Change My World
Paul Kearley
Working with organizations in solving their leadership and management effectiveness crises.
Sitting in bed on a beautiful Sunday morning listening to the radio and just talking about the day and what we would do, this song played: Today I’m going to change the world by Johnny Reid
...and changed my day and my thoughts.
I was transfixed and motivated to do something, anything that would make a difference that day because I realized that to change the world doesn’t have to be that I invent penicillin or stop a war, I can change the world, just by changing how I interact with people.
But who wakes up one day and says that? “Today, I’m going to try and change the world?”
Not too many people I’ll bet.
Not even me.
No, most people wake up and say “Today I’m going to change myself to fit into the world.” And even that statement is radical, most people hide in their caves with the windows shuttered, waiting for change to pass them by.
Let me put this into proper perspective for you.
I’ve played quite a few roles over my years. I’ve been a son, a brother, a friend, a husband, a father, a trainer, a salesperson, an entrepreneur, a cancer survivor, a grandfather, a speaker and a few others that are so low, they don’t deserve to be even mentioned.
But never have I been called a “boat rocker”, as I usually like to leave that to the thicker-skinned people out there who thrive on uncertainty. You know the kind, the ones who risk everything on a hunch or a good idea and relentlessly pursue the goal.?Like my Dad did. These are the people who are not swayed by the doubters and BMW’s (bitching-moaning-whining) and who have faith in their own ideas and actions.
These are the people who say “What if?” while the stampede of doubters is knocking down doors to find a place of habitual comfort.
I’m certain that there comes a time in everyone’s life where we are given the choice to step up to our visions and goals and take the wheel of our own life or to take a back seat on the bus and let someone else do the driving.
This is the moment of truth, the place where we decide to become better or bitter, to own it or to have an excuse as to why we don’t. We can be too young or too old, too small or too big, not smart enough or too smart, scared or ambivalent, excited or bored or have money or not… And when we say we don’t have a choice, we’re lying to ourselves.
We ALWAYS have a choice.
They may not be good choices, but they are choices all the same.
But why do so many people talk about changing the world, and less than 5% actually get off their butts and do something?
I think it’s an ego thing. Let me explain.
Many people who say they want to do something are motivated by what it will bring them. You know, they start the business so they can get paid more and have all the trappings of wealth.?The start something to bring attention to themselves. Some even enter government and make it all about them.?Look at me.?Look at what I’m doing or what I have. Me, me me.
Then look at the other side... the ones who do things that actually change the world. These people are motivated by “us”.?They put themselves last and the world first.?The idea of doing something that will bring happiness and comfort to others shouts at them so loudly they can’t hear the excuses of why they shouldn’t.
That's what the kid down the street did that you don't even know their name, but you saw what they did and you noticed.
That’s what Jesus was doing.??He made living not about what can I get, but what can I get for you?
That’s what Ghandi did.
And Mandela.
And King.
And even Churchill and Rosa Parks.
And many of the people you know that I don’t who changed the world for everyone else.
Was it easy? Well, you know the answer to that one. There were times when they all had doubts, and they felt alone, but with the courage of their convictions, they made the decision to take another step, and another, and yet another, and they changed history.
Do you really want to change the world?
Are you willing to put up with negativity, doubt, jealousy and scorn? Are you prepared to face your own perceived impossibilities?
You are? Great then, now where will you start?
You start with nothing but a fleeting image in your mind. Then you find the why of it and become captured by its potential.?Then you do the impossible, you take some sort of action.?You tell someone, and you move on towards the next step, and you don’t give up.
What about you? What will you do? Where will you make your stand?
